Hopper Field is a stadium located in Freeport, Texas on the campus of Brazosport High School at the east banks of the Brazos River. It is currently home to the high school football teams of the Brazosport Independent School District (BISD), and seats 10,478. [4] It was named in honor of Brazosport High School coach Herbert Eugene Hopper who had served in that position since 1927. [5] Hopper later became the athletic director of the school, and continued in that role before finally retiring in 1971. [6] The stadium is also the site for BISD commencement ceremonies. [7]

History

Hopper Field opened on September 16, 1949 with a game between Brazosport High School and St. Thomas High School of Houston. [8] During the first season of use, stadium lights were blown down due to high winds caused by the 1949 Texas hurricane, and night games were no longer possible until their repair. [9] Originally seating 6,400, Hopper Field's capacity was expanded to 8,662 in 1961. [2] In 2004, an artificial turf known as "Momentum Turf" by Sportexe was installed, among other renovations. [3] [10]

The 1949 Texas hurricane was a tropical cyclone of the 1949 Atlantic hurricane season. Forming in the Pacific Ocean on September 27, the storm crossed into the Gulf of Mexico—one of only a handful of known storms to do so—and began to intensify. It ultimately peaked with winds corresponding to high-end Category 2 status on the modern-day Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale and made landfall near Freeport, Texas, on the morning of October 4. It rapidly weakened after moving inland and dissipated several days later. Damage from the storm was moderate, although the hurricane temporarily cut off the city of Galveston from the mainland. Rice crops suffered extensive damage, with losses estimated at up to $10 million. Two people died due to the hurricane.

Schroeder Park

Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park is a baseball park in Houston, Texas. It is the home field of the Houston Cougars baseball team. Several iterations of the ballpark have existed. The current stadium holds 5,000 people, and opened for baseball in 1995. With a 1,500 square foot Daktronics video board, Schroeder Park features the second-largest scoreboard in college baseball. Since its opening, Schroeder Park has hosted several notable college baseball events. In February 2016, the University of Houston announced that, as a response to a large donation to the baseball program, Cougar Field would be renamed Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

Brazosport College

Brazosport College (BC) is a public, coeducational college located in Lake Jackson, Texas in Greater Houston. The college was opened in 1968 and offers two-year and four-year degrees. The campus features The Clarion, which is a regional musical performance venue, in addition to the Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences, which houses the Brazosport Museum of Natural Science as well as the Brazosport Planetarium among other institutions.

Albertsons Stadium American football stadium at Boise State University

Albertsons Stadium is an outdoor athletic stadium in the western United States, located on the campus of Boise State University in Boise, Idaho. It is the home field of the Boise State Broncos of the Mountain West Conference. Known as Bronco Stadium for its first 44 seasons, it was renamed in May 2014 when Albertsons, a chain of grocery stores founded by Boise area resident Joe Albertson, purchased the naming rights.
