Horstendaal, also written as Horftendaal and Horstendael, was an 18th-century East Indiaman of the Dutch East India Company.
During her first return voyage from Batavia, she stranded in September 1742. The crew and most of the cargo was rescued. After the ship was refloated in October, she wrecked a few days later at the Scheldt estuary, Dutch Republic, on 15 October 1742 at Buizengat, between Callantsoog and Huisduinen.
Horstendaal was built in 1739 in Amsterdam for the Chamber of Amsterdam . She was 145 feet long, had a loading capacity of 850 tons. [1] She was a wooden full-rigged ship with 3 masts. The ship had 260 crew members. [2]
On 2 October 1739, soon after the ship was launched she went to Batavia under command of Leendert Jongebroer. She had an intermediate stop at Cape of Good Hope between 7 and 25 March 1740. [2]
Two years later she started her return voyage to Amsterdam on 19 January 1742 under command of captain Jan Kelder with a cargo of among other pepper, coffee, tea, and silk. [3] She had an intermediate stop at Cape of Good Hope between 22 April 1742 to 11 May 1742. [2] During the last part of the voyage the ship ran aground at Buizengat, between Callantsoog and Huisduinen on 19 September 1742. Two masts were cut down and thrown overboard. [4] [5] [6] Besides of that, the ship was not seriously damaged. Due to the bad weather it was not immediately possible to rescue the crew. Beach surveillance was immediately requested by Jacob Coren in case valuable cargo washed ashore. During the evening of 20 September, two VOC officials sent two ships from Den Helder to the ship to rescue the crew and save as much as possible of the cargo. [3] In the newspaper it was stated that the crew was during the evening “still on the ship”. [7] The next day the Heren XVII , the central government of the Dutch East India Company, came together to discuss the issue. It was decided to leave the recovery of the cargo to the Noorderkwartier. [3]
The strong wind made it difficult or even impossible to unload the cargo. [8] All the crew were rescued. The ship was unloaded as much as possible, including all letters. The ship was still in good condition on September 25, but four days later the ship had a leak. They had to pump hard to get the water out of the ship. [3]
In early October the Heren XVII discussed if the crew of the ship should still receive their owed wages and monthly allowances. It was decided to pay the monthly fee until the day of the accident, so 19 September. The Court of Audit conducted an investigation into this, but the outcome is unclear. [3]
In October the VOC was able to refloat the ship. [3] However, a few days later on 15 October 1742 she ran aground again. The contractors were unable to refloat the ship from the beach, due to an upcoming storm. The ship broke into pieces. On 16 October 1742 the wreckage was publicity sold. [9]
The salvage of goods from stranded or wrecked ships was in that era in the Dutch Republic a lucrative business. The jurisdiction received a third of the proceeds from goods sold. The Horstendaal had valuable cargo onboard. That is also the reason Jacob Coren hurried after the stranding with beach surveillance in case valuable cargo washed ashore. The position of the Horstendaal at the Buisegat was exactly between the jurisdiction of the regents of Callantsoog and that of the regents of Huisduinen and Den Helder. Intense discussion started soon about beach rights between Callantsoog and Huisduinen. However, a final decision about the rights took years. [3]
The Amsterdam was an 18th-century cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company. The ship started its maiden voyage from Texel to Batavia on 8 January 1749, but was wrecked in a storm on the English Channel on 26 January 1749. The shipwreck was discovered in 1969 in the bay of Bulverhythe, near Hastings on the English south coast, and is sometimes visible during low tides. The location in 1969 was found by Bill Young, the site agent/project manager for the sewage outfall being built by the William Press Group. With time on his hands during the long stay away from home, he followed up the rumour of the going aground. He was castigated by the Museum of London for scooping out the interior of the bow with a digger as it could have led to the structure collapsing. However, it uncovered the initial items which led to a more extensive excavation of the cargo which reflected life at the time. The wreck is a Protected Wreck managed by Historic England. Some of the findings from the site are in The Shipwreck Museum in Hastings. A replica of the ship is on display in Amsterdam.
Willem Hesselsz de Vlamingh was a Dutch sea captain who explored the central west coast of New Holland (Australia) in the late 17th century, where he landed in what is now Perth on the Swan River. The mission proved fruitless, but he charted parts of the continent's western coast.
Vianen was a 17th-century Dutch East Indies Company sailing ship, used to transport cargo between Europe and the Indies. She was shipwrecked but refloated on her first voyage, and shipwrecked and sunk on her second. Built at Amsterdam in 1626, she had a gross tonnage of 400.

SS Rotterdam was a steam ocean liner that was launched and completed in Ireland in 1908, and scrapped in the Netherlands in 1940. Holland America Line (HAL) owned and operated her throughout her career. She was the fourth of seven HAL ships to have been named after the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Until Statendam entered service in 1929, Rotterdam was the largest and swiftest ship in the company's fleet, and was the company's flagship.
Pieter Stadnitski was a Dutch broker and financier who invested in the United States, including federal and state debt, canal companies, and land speculation, especially the Holland Land Company. He was the first to bring speculative American bonds - issued by the Congress to finance the American War of Independence - to the Amsterdam market in 1787. Stadnitski was co-founder in 1789 and from 1793 head of a small group of Amsterdam trading houses that bought land in the states of New York and Pennsylvania on a large scale. His role was considered significant by Thomas Jefferson.
Agnes was a Russian three-masted sailing ship, in Dutch sources stated as a full-rigged ship, during the first half of the 19th century. The vessel foundered on the shore of Texel, the Netherlands, in 1894 towards the end of a passage from New York City, United States, to Bremen, Germany.
SS Benbrack was a 19th-century British merchant steamship, built before 1883.
SS Vidar was a 1873-built, 60-metre -long Swedish steamship. It was owned by shipping company Ang Fartyg and was registered in Gothenburg. On 20 September 1875 the ship was driven ashore and wrecked on Terschelling, the Netherlands. The crew members were rescued.
SS Anna Paulowna was a 1857 built 63 metres long Dutch steamship. It was owned by Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM) and had hometown Amsterdam.
SS Katowice, originally named SS Vendemiare, was a 1925-built, 82-metre (269 ft)-long Polish merchant steamship. It was owned by Polish Ocean Lines and was registered in Gdynia.

SS Margariti, originally named SS Wearwood and later also SS Carita and SS Harrow, was a 1930 British built cargo ship of the Constantine Group. It was later owned by British Galbraith, Pembroke & Co., Swedish Manne J. E. and from 1962 by Greek Sigalas & Platis Bros under Lebanese flag. On 18 October 1967 while en route from Gdansk, Poland to Tartous the ship sank near Ameland, the Netherlands, after the ship tilted due to shifting cargo during a gale. All 24 people on board were rescued.
MV Lady Odiel, often written as MV Lady Odile, originally named MV Kalmarsund IX and later also renamed into MV Jomfruland, was a Swedish-built 487 GRT cargo ship in 1957 for Swedish company Angbats A/B Kalmarsund. She was acquired in 1964 by Swedish Andersson, AE, Rönnäng and in 1981 by the British Odiel Shipping Company.
SV Ursula was a 63-metre (207 ft)-long German barque. She was built by the company of Hermann Friedrich Ulrichs in 1885 and owned by D. H. Wätjen und Co. with hometown Bremen.

SS Thasos was an 82-metre (269 ft) German cargo steamship, built in 1879 as Theben for Kosmos Line's service between Hamburg and South America. In 1895 the ship was acquired by the Deutsche Levante-Linie and renamed Thasos for their scheduled service to countries around the Black Sea.
