Hubert Kaufhold (born March 19, 1943, in Braunschweig, Germany) is a German legal scholar and judge, with special research interests in the languages and legal history of the Christian Orient.

Education

Kaufhold studied law (1962–1966) at the University of Münster, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and the University of Göttingen from 1962 to 1966. After passing his first state examination as a lawyer, he continued his study of the Philology of the Christian Orient, Semitic Studies, and Judaism at the University of Göttingen and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1966 to 1969. From 1969 to 1970 he was a research assistant at the Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 1970, he received his Dr. phil. degree in the Philology of the Christian Orient from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with a dissertation on the Law Book of the Nestorian Catholicos Yoḥannan bar Abgare (which he would publish in 1971 as Syrische Texte zum islamischen Recht. Das dem nestorianischen Katholikos Johannes V. bar Aḇgārē zugeschriebene Rechtsbuch (= Abhandlungen der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, phil.-hist. Klasse, NF, Volume 74). [1]

Career

From 1970 to 1973 he was scholarly assistant at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. After completing the Dr. iuris degree in 1973 (with a dissertation on the legal collection of Gabriel, the 9th-century Nestorian metropolitan of Baṣra), [2] and passing his second state examination as a lawyer in that year also, [3] Kaufhold served as a public prosecutor and judge in Munich from 1973 to 2008. Since 1977, he has regularly taught Syriac and the legal history of the Christian Orient at the Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research, where he held the title of Honorary Professor since 1986. [4]

Since 1979, Kaufhold has been an editor of the journal Oriens Christianus . Since 1996, he has been a member of the editorial board of the electronic magazine Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies. Since 1999 he has been a member of the board of directors of the Görres Society in Jerusalem. From 1997 to 2015, he was a member of the Commission for the Editing of the Corpus of Greek Documents of the Middle Ages and Modern Times (since 2010: the Commission for Greek and Byzantine Studies) of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He undertook additional study in canon law (2007–2010) at the Klaus Mörsdorf Study Program in Canon Law (Das Klaus-Mörsdorf-Studium für Kanonistik) at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and was awarded a licentiate of canon law (Lic. Iur. Can.) in 2013. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Christian Orient Research Center at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. [5]

Since 1992 he has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (philosophical-historical class). [6] The Bavarian Academy of Sciences awarded him the Academy Award in 2011. [7] The Syrian Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I. Iwas awarded him the St. Ephräm Order in 2013. [8] The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising awarded him the Audomar Scheuermann Study Prize in 2015. [9] Since 2017 he has been a member of the Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan. [10]

Kaufhold is the author or editor of 11 books, 75 scholarly articles, and over 170 book reviews. [11]

Dieter Nörr was a German scholar of Ancient Law. He studied at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1949 to 1953. After receiving his doctorate with a dissertation on criminal law in the Code of Hammurabi, Nörr undertook postdoctoral study at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Rome. He worked for a year as a post-doctoral assistant at the Institute for Criminal Law and Legal Philosophy under Karl Engisch. He received his Habilitation at the University of Munich, under Professor Wolfgang Kunkel, in 1959 with a work on Byzantine Contract Law and was promoted to Privatdozent. He then accepted the Chair of Roman and Civil Law at the University of Hamburg. In 1960, Nörr became Full Professor at the University of Münster. After he declined positions at the Universities of Hamburg, Tübingen, and Bielefeld, he returned to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich as Professor, Chair of Roman Law, and Director of the Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research. His brother, Knut Wolfgang Nörr, was also a Professor of Legal History, especially Canon Law, at the University of Tübingen.

Leopold Wenger was a prominent Austrian historian of ancient law. He fostered interdisciplinary study of the ancient world.

The Leopold Wenger Institute for Ancient Legal History and Papyrus Research is an institute of the law school of the University of Munich. It traces itself back to the Seminar for Papyrus Research founded by Professor Leopold Wenger in 1909. It was renamed the “Leopold Wenger Institute for Legal History and Papyrus Research” in Wenger’s honor in 1956, under the direction of Wolfgang Kunkel. Added to this was the acquisition of the surviving holdings of Wenger’s colleague Professor Mariano San Nicolò. Kunkel’s work in building the institute’s library was also supported by Johannes von Elmenau at the Bavarian Ministry of Culture and the Society of Friends and Supporters of the University of Munich e.V..

Max Kaser was a German professor of Jurisprudence who taught successively at the universities of Münster, Hamburg and Salzburg. The principal focus of his scholarship and teaching was on Roman law. He became a member of a number of learned societies. In addition, between 1958 and 1992 he was awarded honorary doctorates by no fewer than ten different universities on three different continents. Michael Stolleis was a German jurist and historian. He was a law professor at Goethe University Frankfurt until 2006 and directed the Max Planck Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte of the Max Planck Society from 1991 to 2009.

Thomas Duve is a German jurist and historian. He is a law professor at Goethe University Frankfurt and director of the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory of the Max Planck Society since 2009.
