Born in Palestine in 1973, Hussein Azzam was a former prisoner held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. [1]

He was released in 2004, two years after his capture, without charge and returned home to his family. [2] According to the United States Department of Defense's official list of release dates, a captive listed as "Abdul Qadir Yousef Hussein" was transferred on March 31, 2004. His Internment Serial Number was 715. [3]

Life

A cousin of scholar and jihadist Abdullah Azzam, Azzam studied Islamic law in Saudi Arabia and received his Master's degree before returning to Palestine, where he had trouble finding work as a teacher in the West Bank. [4]

In 1985 he moved to Peshawar, Pakistan, as he heard that the country had begun setting up schools for the refugees flooding in from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. [4] He remained as a teacher in the region through the 2001 American invasion of Afghanistan, but was not targeted by any forces and said that he felt no fear as he had no connection to local militants. [4]

Arrest

Azzam's home was raided by Pakistani forces on May 25, 2002, and he was arrested along with his two sons, the 23-year-old Abdullah and 18-year-old Muhammad. The two boys were released, but Azzam was held. [4]

He was transferred to the Bagram collection point facility, before being flown to the Guantanamo detainment camps. He was interrogated five times over a captivity of 10 months.[ citation needed ]

After his arrest, his family moved back to Jordan to avoid persecution. However the increased cost of health care in the country meant that his son Abdullah's heart condition worsened, and he died in February 2004. [4]

Release

Azzam was released on August 27, 2004, and returned to his family in Jordan. [4]

Fouzi Khalid Abdullah Al Odah is a Kuwaiti citizen formerly held in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. He had been detained without charge in Guantanamo Bay since 2002. He was a plaintiff in the ongoing case, Al Odah v. United States, which challenged his detention, along with that of fellow detainees. The case was widely acknowledged to be one of the most significant to be heard by the Supreme Court in the current term. The US Department of Defense reports that he was born in 1977, in Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Mosa Zi Zemmori is a Belgian citizen who was held in extrajudicial detention in the United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba. His Guantanamo detainee ID number was 270. The Department of Defense reports that his date of birth is 3 July 1978, in Wilrijk, Belgium. He was repatriated to Belgium on 25 April 2005. When he was arrested he was characterized as a Moroccan, or a Belgian, from Morocco, although the DoD says he was born in Belgium.

Abdullah Mujahid is a citizen of Afghanistan who is still held in extrajudicial detention after being transferred from United States Guantanamo Bay detainment camps, in Cuba — to an Afghan prison. His Guantanamo Internment Serial Number was 1100.

Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost is an Afghan Salafi jihadist militant who served primarily with the Taliban, and later, as a founding member of ISIS–K. Dost's militancy began by age 19, when he left Afghanistan to join the Ikhwan, carrying out the Grand Mosque seizure in Mecca, Saudi Arabia before most of the group were captured and executed, though Dost escaped to Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. By 1986, he had returned to Afghanistan to fight in the Soviet–Afghan War as a member of Jamaat al-Dawah ila al-Quran wal-Sunnah, a Salafist forerunner to the Taliban. Following the Soviet withdrawal, he joined the Taliban as they ascended to power in the 1990s.
