Hylton George Leslie "Heck" Davies (1915-1945) was an Australian AIF officer who fell in WWII during the Battle of Balikpapan. He had been a top-grade rugby league footballer who played for Newtown in the NSWRFL in the 1930s.
Davies played four seasons of first grade for Newtown [2] between 1936 and 1939 before his war service.
Davies enlisted in the AIF in late 1939 and didn't play rugby league again. [3] He attained the rank of captain in the Australian Army and he served in Great Britain, Syria, The Middle East, Kokoda Track, Lae and Borneo. [4]
Hylton Davies was killed during the Battle of Balikpapan in 1945 when a Japanese mortar shell hit Davies' battalion's headquarters. [5]
Davies married Lurline Hook, diving gold medallist at the 1938 Empire Games. She and their son, Ian, survived him. [4]
The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. They currently compete in the NSW Cup competition, having left the top grade after the 1983 NSWRFL season. The Jets' home ground is Henson Park, and their team colours are blue and white.

Edward Rennix Larkin was an Australian parliamentarian and a national representative rugby union player. Larkin was the member for Willoughby in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from December 1913 until his death. He served in the 1st AIF, and was killed in action on the first day of the Gallipoli Campaign. He was one of only two serving members of any Australian parliament to fall in World War I — the other was George Braund, also a New South Wales MLA who fell at Gallipoli.
William Thornton Watson, DSO, MC, DCM was a New Zealander who served as an officer in the Australian Imperial Force in both World Wars. Prior to and after the First World War he had a distinguished rugby union career, representing Australia in eight Test matches and captaining the national side on three occasions. During the New Guinea Campaign in the Second World War he was the Commanding Officer of the Papuan Infantry Battalion. Following the war, he served as Australia's Vice – Consul to New York.
