Ralph Bristout of XXL said "Despite the notable joints, I'm Up is flooded with featured guests, whom often outshine the rapper ("Don't Make No Sense" next to Fabolous and 8Ball; "Scarface" alongside Scarface). Though they don't necessarily hurt the project— adding a mélange of different styles and various temperaments—the supporting cast makes the tape seem more like a compilation project than a solo." [1] Slava Kuperstein of HipHopDX said "Whatever criticisms fans may offer of Gucci Mane, the man works the mixtape scene hard. A cursory look at Wikipedia reveals that I'm Up is Gucci's 27th mixtape; not only that, but it's the second of this year. Sure, it's easier to have such prolific output when your subject matter is so narrow you could thread a needle with it, but Gucci delivers what the people want from him: a handful of hard-hitting beats, a few quotables, and some memorable guest spots." Radric Delantic Davis, known professionally as Gucci Mane, is an American rapper and record executive. He is credited, along with fellow Atlanta-based rappers T.I. and Jeezy, with pioneering the hip hop subgenre trap music for mainstream audiences into the 2000s. His debut studio album, Trap House (2005) was released by the independent label Big Cat Records and entered the Billboard 200; it was followed by Hard to Kill (2006), which spawned his first Billboard Hot 100 entry with its 2007 single, "Freaky Gurl". That same year, he released his third album, Trap-A-Thon before signing with Atlantic Records to release his fourth album, Back to the Trap House (2007).
Tyree Cinque Simmons, known professionally as DJ Drama, is an American disc jockey (DJ), record executive and music promoter. He initially gained recognition as the DJ for Atlanta-based rapper T.I., and continued to gain prominence hosting mixtapes for other hip hop artists. He is known for his trademark Gangsta Grillz series, a branding used on projects of which were compiled by Drama, utilized by collaborators including Lil Wayne, Tyler the Creator, Snoop Dogg, Yo Gotti, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Fabolous, Jeezy, Meek Mill, and Gucci Mane, among others. The album was mostly produced by label producer Southside, with additional production by 808 Mafia, Drumma Boy, Fatboi, Shawty Redd, and Schife. According to Waka Flocka, the album was completed in two weeks.

It was released as the second single from his 2022 deluxe compilation album So Icy Gang: The ReUp, through Atlantic and 1017 Records on March 4, 2022. Mane wrote the song with producer Tay Keith. It is a response to YoungBoy Never Broke Again's single, "I Hate YoungBoy", which was released more than a week before, in which YoungBoy rapped a line about not having respect for Mane anymore because of Mane reportedly supporting people that YoungBoy is against.
