The IEEE Professional Communication Society(IEEE ProComm) is a professional society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Its primary goals include helping engineers and technical writers to pursue further education and research in their fields, in addition to development of standards in technical communication. [1] The society runs the annual IEEE International Professional Communication Conference, known as ProComm (formerly known as IPCC). [2]

The IEEE Professional Communication Society has published a peer-reviewed journal known as the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication since 1957. [3] [4]

History

Formed in March 1957 as the IRE Professional Group on Engineering Writing, the group changed its name to the IRE Professional Group on Engineering Writing and Speech (April 1957), IEEE Professional Technical Group on Engineering Writing and Speech (1963), IEEE Group on Engineering Writing and Speech (1964), IEEE Group on Professional Communication (1971), and the IEEE Professional Communication Society (1978). [5]

Field of interest

The society states on its website that its field of interest includes "the study, preparation, production, delivery, use, improvement, and promotion of human communication in all media in engineering and other technical and professional environments". Its mission, related to this field, is to "foster a community dedicated to understanding and promoting effective communication in engineering, scientific, and other technical environments". [6]

The Society held its first "Meeting" in Detroit in 1950. The Society's first Transactions was published in 1952. Like the Society, the Transactions has carried many names. IEEE Transactions on Communications is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the IEEE Communications Society that focuses on all aspects of telecommunication technology, including telephone, telegraphy, facsimile, and point-to-point television by electromagnetic propagation. The editor-in-chief is Tolga M. Duman. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2018 impact factor of 5.69.

Harald Trap Friis, who published as H. T. Friis, was a Danish-American radio engineer whose work at Bell Laboratories included pioneering contributions to radio propagation, radio astronomy, and radar. His two Friis formulas remain widely used.

Professional communication is a sub-genre found within the study of communications. This subset encompasses written, oral, visual, and digital communication within a workplace context. It is based upon the theory of professional communications, which is built on the foundation that for an organization to succeed, the communication network within must flow fluently. The concepts found within this sub-set aim to help professional settings build a foundational communication network to better steady the flow of operations and messages from upper-level management. The second part of professional communication can also aim and assist to help within the public relations department of a particular company or organization, as these messages might be delivered to those unfamiliar with the organization or the general public.

The Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge is a body of knowledge, set forth in a proposal by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) entitled Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st century. This proposal seeks to identify and implement improvements to the education and licensure process for civil engineers in the United States of America. The proposal is intended to increase occupational closure by increasing the requirements to become a licensed engineer. Some have identified this joint effort with the Raising the Bar as not necessary.

The IEEE Signal Processing Society is one of the nearly 40 technical societies of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the first one created. Its mission is to "advance and disseminate state-of-the-art scientific information and resources; educate the signal processing community; and provide a venue for people to interact and exchange ideas."

The IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society is a professional society of the IEEE. It aims "to serve the interests of its members and the community at large by promoting the theory, practice, and interdisciplinary aspects of systems science and engineering, human-machine systems, and cybernetics".

Donald Glen Fink was an American electrical engineer, a pioneer in the development of radio navigation systems and television standards, vice president for research of Philco, president of the Institute of Radio Engineers, General Manager of the IEEE, and an editor of many important publications in electrical engineering.

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society. It covers the organization, design, development, integration, and operation of complex systems for space, air, ocean, or ground environment. The editor-in-chief is Gokhan Inalhan. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2020 impact factor of 4.102.

IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication is a peer-reviewed journal publishing four times a year since 1957 by the IEEE Professional Communication Society. Readers include engineers, scientists, technical and professional writers, information designers, managers, and others working as scholars, educators, and practitioners in the effective communication of technical and business information.
