Ian Harper

Ian Ross Harper AO FASSA FAICD is an Australian economist, economics professor and current dean of the Melbourne Business School.

Harper has a Bachelor of Economics with honours from the University of Queensland and a Master of Economics and Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University. [1] Before becoming the dean, he was Professor emeritus at the Melbourne Business School, a graduate school of the University of Melbourne. [2]

Career

Harper began his career working at the Reserve bank, after completion of his PhD. [3] He was the inaugural chairman of the Australian Fair Pay Commission before that body was abolished in 2009. [2] He then joined Deloitte's Melbourne office as a partner, and then senior adviser. He headed the Federal Government's Competition Review, releasing the final report ("the Competition Policy Review" or "Harper Review") [4] [5] [6] [7] of 56 recommendations on 31 March 2015. [8] He was appointed to the board of the Reserve Bank in 2016 [3] before returning to academia as the Dean of the Melbourne Business School, in 2018. [9]

Published works

Harper has published numerous articles, [1] and recently wrote Economics for life ( ISBN   0908284950) which won the 2011 SPCK Australian Christian Book of the Year Award. [10]

Honours

Harper was elected to the Australian Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2000 and later elected to the Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. [6]

Harper was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours, "for distinguished service to education in the field of economics, and to public and monetary policy development and reform." [11]

Personal life

Harper is a professing Christian and often speaks publicly about his Christian faith. [12]

Joshua Gans Australian academic

Until 2011, he was an economics professor at Melbourne Business School in Australia. His research focuses on competition policy and intellectual property protection. He is the author of several textbooks and policy books, as well as numerous articles in economics journals. He operates two blogs: one on economic policy, and another on economics and parenting.

Andrew Leigh Australian politician

Andrew Keith Leigh is an Australian politician, author, and former professor of economics at the Australian National University. He has been a Labor member of the Australian House of Representatives since 2010 representing the seat of Fraser until 2016 and Fenner thereafter. He briefly served as the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Julia Gillard in 2013 and then served as Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Competition from 2013 to 2019. Leigh is not a member of any factions of the Labor Party.

University of Sydney Business School

The University of Sydney Business School is the business faculty and a constituent body of the University of Sydney. It was established in January 2011 and formed from the School of Business within the previous Faculty of Economics and Business. The former combined faculty itself descended from the original Faculty of Economics founded in 1920, which was the first faculty of its kind in Australia.

Donald John Markwell is an Australian social scientist, who has been described as a "renowned Australian educational reformer". He was appointed Head of St Mark's College, Adelaide, from November 2019. He was Senior Adviser to the Leader of the Government in the Australian Senate from October 2015 to December 2017, and was previously Senior Adviser on Higher Education to the Australian Minister for Education.

Richard Denniss is the Chief Economist and former Executive Director of The Australia Institute. He is a prominent Australian economist, author and public policy commentator, and a former Associate Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Denniss was described by Mark Kenny in the Sydney Morning Herald as "a constant thorn in the side of politicians on both sides due to his habit of skewering dodgy economic justifications for policy". In October 2018, The Australian Financial Review listed Denniss and Ben Oquist of The Australia Institute as equal tenth-place on their 'Covert Power' list of the most powerful people in Australia.

University of Western Australia Business School

The University of Western Australia Business School is a business school at the University of Western Australia (UWA). UWA first began teaching Economics in 1912, and the Business School is now home to over 5,800 students. The school has four disciplines: Accounting and Finance; Economics; Management and Organisations; and Marketing.

Franklin "Frank" J.B. Stilwell is an influential Australian political economist and professor emeritus. He is known for establishing, with Evan Jones, Gavan Butler, Margaret Power and Ted Wheelwright, an independent political economy department at the University of Sydney. His research interests include theories of political economy, urbanisation and regional development, Australian economic policy and the nature of work. His textbooks on the subject are standard teaching material for all university students in Australia studying the field of Political Economy. Stilwell's contribution to heterodox economics makes him a noteworthy figure of the Australian New Left.

Professor Tim Brailsford is the current Vice Chancellor and President of Bond University, an appointment he commenced in January, 2012. An expert in finance and investments, his previous positions include the Frank Finn Professor of Finance and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics & Law at the University of Queensland; Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the Australian National University in Canberra, and other senior academic positions at the University of Melbourne and Monash University. Christopher Joye is an Australian fixed-income fund manager with Coolabah Capital Investments, contributing editor with The Australian Financial Review, financial economist, and former government advisor. He is the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research (CEPAR) at the University of New South Wales, Australia, where he is Scientia Professor of Economics. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
