Ian James Norman is a British nursing researcher and author,based in Surrey,UK. His research and writing is focused primarily in the fields of psychiatric and mental health nursing,and psychological treatments for people with mental health difficulties. Norman is Emeritus Professor of Mental Health in the Faculty of Nursing,Midwifery &Palliative Care at King's College London. He is a former Executive Dean of Faculty and Assistant Principal (Academic Performance) at King's. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies [1] and a practising cognitive behavioural psychotherapist. [2]
Ian Norman was born in Devon and attended Exeter School. He holds a BA degree in the social sciences from the University of Keele,an MSc degree in education from Edinburgh University and a PhD degree from London University. He was appointed as a Lecturer in Psychiatric Nursing in the Department of Nursing Studies,King’s College London,in 1988,was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1994 and to Professor of Mental Health in 1997. He was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies in 2005.
Norman was a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo in 2011 and had periods of secondment to South Africa in 2014 and Ireland in 2015 to work on an EU-funded study [3] [4] to reduce the risk of codeine misuse and dependence.
In August 2018 Norman was interviewed on a live breakfast-time TV channel about a nursing education initiative between King's College London and Ngee Ann Academy Singapore and the world shortage of healthcare workers. [5]
Norman is the author of more than 300 academic outputs. [6] His latest book,The Art &Science of Mental Health Nursing (published in its 4th edition in 2018),is a standard textbook for mental health nurse education in the UK and is well known internationally.

The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing,Midwifery &Palliative Care is an academic faculty within King's College London. The faculty is the world's first nursing school to be continuously connected to a fully serving hospital and medical school. Established on 9 July 1860 by Florence Nightingale,the founder of modern nursing,it was a model for many similar training schools through the UK,Commonwealth and other countries for the latter half of the 19th century. It is primarily concerned with the education of people to become nurses and midwives. It also carries out nursing research,continuing professional development and postgraduate programmes. The Faculty forms part of the Waterloo campus on the South Bank of the River Thames and is now one of the largest faculties in the university.
Kevin Joseph Michael Gournay CBE FMedSci FRCN FRSM FRCPsych (Hon) PhD RN CSci Cert CBT is a registered psychologist,chartered scientist and a registered nurse by background. He is an emeritus professor at the Institute of Psychiatry,Psychology and Neuroscience;King's College London. He was a consultant psychologist at the Priory Hospital North London;retiring in December 2018. He then returned to clinical work as part of the national response to COVID19;retiring once more in 2023. He is currently an Honorary Professor at the Matilda Centre;University of Sydney. His work in Australia spans 30 years to the present and focusses on the combination of mental health problems and substance use. During the COVID19 pandemic he contributed to research on the impacts of COVID19 on mental health. He has been responsible over many years for a very wide range of research,policy and practice development in mental health care. He also works as an Expert Witness;he has provided reports on more than 300 suicides;20 homicides and hundreds of reports on people who have suffered the consequences of traumatic events,including accidents,terrorist related incidents,natural disasters,war related events and stillbirth and perinatal death. He has also provided numerous reports on patients receiving care and treatment in high secure and Medium secure settings,including Broadmoor,Rampton and Ashworth hospitals

Eileen Skellern FRCN (1923–1980) was an English psychiatric nurse who was involved in pioneering psychosocial and psychotherapeutic methods for treating patients. She helped open up new roles for nurses in mental health work,and demonstrated that they could be equal partners in a team,taking personal responsibility for patient care while collaborating with doctors and playing an important part in new developments in therapeutic treatment.
