Ian Richard Smith (born 16 March 1965) is a former Scotland international rugby union player. He is now a rugby union coach. [1]

Rugby Union career

Amateur career

He was educated at the Sir Thomas Rich's School in Longlevens. [2] He went on to play for Gloucester. He formerly played as a flanker. Smith made his senior debut aged 18 and by 1996 had played more than 350 games for them. [3]

Provincial career

He played for the Scottish Exiles district in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. Smith stated: "I always wanted to play for Scotland, from the days of watching the Five Nations sat on my grandfather’s knee." [4]

International career

He represented England 'B' against Spain in 1989. He also qualified for Scotland through his paternal grandparents and Ian McGeechan persuaded him to play for Scotland. [3]

He played for Scotland 'B' against Ireland 'B' on 22 December 1990.

In 1991 he played for Scotland 7s in the Hong Kong Sevens tournament. [5]

He made his full test debut for Scotland against England at Murrayfield on 18 January 1992. [1] He played one match at the 1995 World Cup. His last international appearance was against South Africa at Murrayfield on 6 December 1997. He gained 25 caps for Scotland in the period 1992–97.

He played 7 matches for the Barbarian F.C. and scored 9 points between 1990 and 1993. He captained the team against Newport in 1992. [2]

Coaching career

In 2004 returned to Moseley as head coach. [5] In 2009 Mosely beat Leeds at Twickenham to win the EDF Energy National Trophy. [6]

In 2011 he went on to a coaching role with the Georgia national rugby union team. [7] He was appointed interim and later effective head coach of Portugal going into the World Rugby Nations Cup in 2016. [8]

Outside of rugby union

He worked as a civil engineer. [9]

Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club is an English rugby union club, based in Birmingham, that compete in the third tier of English rugby. They were historically the premier rugby club in Birmingham, reaching the final of the John Player Cup three times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They originally played at the Reddings, but after attempting to keep up with the transition to professional rugby, the club ran into financial difficulties and were forced to sell their 125-year home to property developers. An unsuccessful five-year spell based at the University of Birmingham followed, during which time they were relegated to National Division Two. In 2005 the club moved to its new home at Billesley Common, and were promoted to National Division One in 2006. In 2009 they won their first cup in 27 years beating Leeds 23–18 in the final of the National Trophy at Twickenham. On the weekend starting 15 April 2016; defeat to Bristol, combined with results elsewhere during the same weekend, confirmed Moseley's relegation to National League 1 for the 2016–17 season.

Ian Scott Smith was a rugby union wing who played 32 Tests for Scotland and two Tests for the British Isles. Born in Melbourne, Australia, and brought up in New Zealand, Smith moved to England and was educated at Winchester College, before studying at Oxford University and later Edinburgh University. At Oxford he took up rugby and was eventually selected for Scotland, for whom he was eligible because of his Scottish parents. He toured with the British Isles to South Africa in 1924, and played all four matches in Scotland's first ever Five Nations Grand Slam in 1925. He represented Scotland until 1933 when he captained them in their Triple Crown winning season. His 24 international tries, all scored in the Five Nations or Home Nations, was an international record until 1987 and a record for the Five/Six Nations until 2011. This record stood for 88 years until 2021, when it was broken by Stuart Hogg.

Donald Rutherford was an England international rugby union player and administrator. He was the first ever Technical Director of the Rugby Football Union at Twickenham, becoming Director of Rugby where he served with distinction from 1969 – 1999.
