Idiotape is a South Korean electronic music band. They released their debut EP 0805 in July 2010 and their first album 11111101, a year later, which won "Best Dance & Electronic Album" at the 2012 Korean Music Awards. [1] [2] They have performed at multiple music festivals at home and around the world. [3] [4]

History

Formation and members

The members are Dguru (producer and deejay), Zeze (synth) and DR (drums). [2] [3] [5] [6]

The band was initially formed in 2007, when members Dguru and Zeze met in the Seoul club scene, and started the band with a guitarist, who later left. [3] The current band was formed in 2010, when drummer DR, formerly of the Seoul pop punk, pop rock band Sugar Donut, joined them. [6]

Their name is a combination of the words "idiot" and "tape", which combined, minus one "t", also produced "idiot" and "ape"; and is a reflection of their nostalgia for cassettes, which they grew up with, and the use of analog equipment, which they favored. [3] [7]

Sound and influence

They were influenced by Korean classic rock from the 1960s and 1970s, [6] and a wide range of bands, including The Doors, Radiohead, Metallica and Pantera. [3] They are known for their analog sound, but still credit their rock influences. During a 2014 interview with WNUR-FM's Danny Hwang in Chicago Zeze said, "We for starters, began because we wanted to do electronic music, make an electronic band. But generally, in a way, I don't think we're too different from the average rock band. It's just that sounds we like happen to be synthesizers or other electronic instruments and I think we make the music we like using those instruments. And we try not to limit ourselves in terms of the sound or genre. It's more like we're doing whatever we want to do." [7]

Touring and festivals

In March 2011, they were part of the first group of Seoulsonic bands, along with Vidulgi OoyoO and Galaxy Express, who performed at the Canadian Music Week in Toronto and SXSW in Austin, Texas, following up with a U.S. tour, including concerts in New York (The Knitting Factory) and Los Angeles (The Roxy). [5] [8] They performed at SXSW again in 2014 at K-Pop Night Out at SXSW. [9] [10] [11] They have also opened for Fatboy Slim at Global Gathering Korea and performed at other festivals, including, the Pentaport Rock Festival, [5] Glastonbury Festival, Exit Festival, Rencontres Trans Musicales, [2] Summer Sonic Festival, Future Music Festival, [3] Fusion Festival, Paléo Festival, Mundial Festival Netherlands, FMM Sines, [4] Ansan Valley Rock Festival, [12] Midem, [13] [14] and Ultra Korea 2016. [15]

K-pop, short for Korean popular music, is a form of popular music originating in South Korea as part of South Korean culture. It includes styles and genres from around the world, such as pop, hip hop, R&B, rock, jazz, gospel, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, disco, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. TraxX, was a South Korean EDM trio that consisted of Jay, Jungmo and Ginjo. Originally a four-member rock band formed by SM Entertainment and X Japan's co-founder Yoshiki in 2004, it consisted of Typhoon Jay (vocals), Rose Minwoo, Attack Jungwoo, and Xmas Jungmo. Their name is an acronym of "Typhoon Rose Attack Xmas", the members' nicknames.

<i>Pink Tape</i> 2013 studio album by f(x)

Pink Tape is the second studio album by South Korean girl group f(x). The album was released on July 29, 2013, by S.M. Entertainment. Pink Tape is the first studio album by f(x) in over two years, the last being the repackage of their first album Hot Summer in 2011, and the first Korean release in over a year since 2012's Electric Shock. The album peaked at the number one position on multiple music charts internationally including Billboard's World Albums and South Korea's Gaon charts.

Nell is a South Korean alternative rock band formed in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist, keyboardist and guitarist Kim Jong-wan, lead guitarist Lee Jae-kyung, bass guitarist Lee Jung-hoon and drummer Jung Jae-won. The group was named after the film, Nell, that starred Jodie Foster. YB, formerly known as Yoon Do-hyun Band (Korean: 윤도현밴드), is a South Korean rock band. Formed in 1996, the band consists of Yoon Do-hyun, Heo Jun, Kim Jin-won (drums), Park Tae-hee and Scott Hellowell (guitar). YB rose to major popularity and success during the 2002 World Cup, and once again in 2011 through appearing in the Korean TV show I Am a Singer. They have performed across the world and regularly headline major rock festivals in South Korea.

Valley Rock Festival is held annually on the last weekend of July. Sharing many artists, the festival is arranged by 9 Ent, which is Smash Corporation, and in close coordination with Japanese Fuji Rock Festival. In 2009 on the festival's maiden year, there were some controversies regarding the festival's split from neighboring Pentaport Rock Festival. However the festival's sponsor changed to Mnet media in 2010 and CJ E&M in 2011. VRF has been successful and has grown into one of South Korea's biggest music festivals.

f(x) (musical group) South Korean girl group

f(x) (; Korean: 에프엑스) is a South Korean girl group, consisting of Victoria, Amber, Luna, Krystal and previously Sulli until her departure from the group in August 2015. Formed by SM, f(x) officially debuted in September 2009 with the release of the digital single "La Cha Ta".

Yoon Do-hyun is a South Korean hard rock/folk rock singer, musician, and songwriter. He is the founder and lead vocalist of the Yoon Do-hyun Band (YB) since 1996. Yoon is also an MC on TV variety programs and a musical theatre actor.

<i>2gether</i> (CNBLUE album) 2015 studio album by CNBLUE

2gether is the second studio album by South Korean pop rock idol band CNBLUE. It was released on September 14, 2015, under FNC Entertainment. After ending domestic promotions for Can't Stop (2014), the band concentrated on individual activities; most notably, frontman Jung Yong-hwa released his debut solo album One Fine Day (2015) in January. The remaining band members sought out opportunities in television, particularly in acting, variety show appearances, and MCing. In August 2015, it was announced that CNBLUE would release its second studio album after an absence lasting one year and seven months. With 2gether, the band decided to change the direction of its music; it stripped itself of the acoustic tracks it was known for and explored electronic dance music in order to create a particular color and form a distinctive sound.
