Ilakkiyan is an Indian poet, lyricist and film writer from Tamil Nadu, India. [1] [2] [3] [4] He has written lyrics, stories, and screenplays for several films in the Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada film industries. [5] [6] [7]
Ilakkiyan was born in Salem, Tamil Nadu to the couple Kaliyappan and Bhakkiyam. His birth name was Rajendran. Due to his love for Tamil literature, he adopted the pen name Ilakkiyan (meaning “literary person”). He displayed literary talent from a young age, writing poems and stories. He later moved to Chennai with the intention of becoming a film director.
He started his film career as an assistant director for the Tamil film Priyam . At the same time, he debuted as a lyricist with the song "Neikkarapatti Ponnamma" in the film Ayudha Poojai . He continued as a lyricist for films like Priyam , Suyamvaram (a film which holds a Guinness World Record for being shot in a single day), Rettai Jadai Vayasu starring Ajith Kumar, and the Malayalam film Mahathma , starring Suresh Gopi. [8] The song "Siva Siva Shankara" from Suyamvaram, composed by Vidyasagar with lyrics by Ilakkiyan, marked Prabhu Deva’s debut as a playback singer and became a highlight of the film. [9] He also wrote the story and screenplay for Kannada films such as Rajkumari and Pakka Chukka , and collaborating with director S. Narayan on several projects. [10]
