Ilaria Perugia (born 1969) is an Italian applied mathematician and numerical analyst whose research concerns numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially Galerkin methods. She works at the University of Vienna in Austria as Professor of the Numerics of Partial Differential Equations. [1]
Perugia was born on 23 October 1969 in Milan. She studied mathematics at the University of Pavia, working there with Gianni Arrigo Pozzi and Franco Brezzi. She earned a laurea in 1993, [1] winning the university's triennial Berzolari Prize for best laurea thesis. [2]
Next, she moved to the University of Milan for graduate study in computational mathematics and operations research, completing her Ph.D. in 1998. [1] Her doctoral dissertation, Discretization of Linearly Constrained Problems And Applications In Scientific Computing, was again supervised by Brezzi. [1] [3]
Perugia held a research appointment at the University of Pavia from 1995 to 2001, during which time she also visited the University of Minnesota as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2001 she was given an associate professorship at the University of Pavia, and in 2011 she became Professor of Numerical Analysis there. She moved to her present position in Vienna in 2013, and became deputy director of the Erwin Schrödinger International Institute for Mathematics and Physics at the University of Vienna in 2016. [1]
She has also held a research associate position with the Italian National Research Council (CNR), in their Pavia-based Institute for Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies (IMATI), since 2001. [1]
Heinz-Otto Kreiss was a German mathematician in the fields of numerical analysis, applied mathematics, and what was the new area of computing in the early 1960s. Born in Hamburg, Germany, he earned his Ph.D. at Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in 1959. Over the course of his long career, Kreiss wrote a number of books in addition to the purely academic journal articles he authored across several disciplines. He was professor at Uppsala University, California Institute of Technology and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. At the time of his death, Kreiss was a Swedish citizen, living in Stockholm. He died in Stockholm in 2015, aged 85.
Christopher John Budd is a British mathematician known especially for his contribution to non-linear differential equations and their applications in industry. He is currently Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath, and Professor of Geometry at Gresham College.
Ivo M. Babuška is a Czech-American mathematician, noted for his studies of the finite element method and the proof of the Babuška–Lax–Milgram theorem in partial differential equations. One of the celebrated result in the finite elements is the so-called Ladyzenskaja–Babuška–Brezzi (LBB) condition, which provides sufficient conditions for a stable mixed formulation. The LBB condition has guided mathematicians and engineers to develop state-of-the-art formulations for many technologically important problems like Darcy flow, Stokes flow, incompressible Navier–Stokes, nearly incompressible elasticity.
Burton Wendroff is an American applied mathematician known for his contributions to the development of numerical methods for the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations. The Lax–Wendroff method for the solution of hyperbolic PDE is named for Wendroff.

Sara Zahedi is an Iranian-Swedish mathematician who works in computational fluid dynamics and holds an associate professorship in numerical analysis at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. She is one of ten winners and the only female winner of the European Mathematical Society Prize for 2016 "for her outstanding research regarding the development and analysis of numerical algorithms for partial differential equations with a focus on applications to problems with dynamically changing geometry". The topic of Zahedi's EMS Prize lecture was her recent research on the CutFEM method of solving fluid dynamics problems with changing boundary geometry, such as arise when simulating the dynamics of systems of two immiscible liquids. This method combines level set methods to represent the domain boundaries as cuts through an underlying uniform grid, together with numerical simulation techniques that can adapt to the complex geometries of grid cells cut by these boundaries.
