Impact Records was a California based record label run by CT Records creator, [1] Tony Hilder in the 1960s. This label released some surf records by The Crestwoods, Dave Myers and The Surftones, [2] The Ramblers and The New Breed [3] and The Revels. [2] The Revels were known for the hits "Comanche" and "Intoxica". [4]
Formed in the 1960s, this Los Angeles-based record label was managed by Tony Hilder. [5] Among other things, Impact Records served as an outlet for masters that Hilder couldn't get released on other labels. A good deal of the material released was from local aspiring artists and bands of the Los Angeles area. [6] [7] Dean Zook handled the radio promotion for the Midwest, working from his base in Denver. [8]
The first release on the label was "Church Key" by The Revels. The song was the first release for the label and credited to The Revels with Barbara Adkins. [9] The single was distributed nationally by Liberty Records but was issued under the banner of Impact to keep the identity of the label. [10] The Revels, a local Californian band who had been around since 1957 [11] had 4 singles released on the label from 1960 to 1962 which included the single they were best known for "Church Key". One album that was produced by Hilder and released on the Impact label was called Shake! Shout! & Soul. The recording for the album was done live at Santa Monica's 2nd Annual Surf Fair. It featured Lil Ray, The Original Surfaris, Dave Myers and the Surftones, The New Dimensions, Steve Korey and The Virtue Four. [13] [14] [15]
In April, 1962, Billboard reported that the Shorty Bacon band was backing Beverly Mae Wilson on a record she was to cut a record for Impact. [16] Shorty Bacon's own release on the label was in 1961 with "Ten Times The World" / "What's Wrong With You". The B side was co-written by him. [17] Later, he had another single on the label with "Daniel Boone " bw Walls Of Yuma". He had a recording history that went back to the 1950s and prior to his releases on Impact, he had records out on the Kelley, Mohawk and Ozark labels. [18] A few years later he was playing with Rose Maddox. [19] One of his later records "Stand Up Fool" did quite well and gained a degree of popularity in the early 1970s. [20]
In 1962, Rue Barclay had a release with "I've Lost The Road" bw "Please Dear Won't You Stay" on the label. His history in recording went back to the late 1940s. The Cupons were a group who had their single released on Impact. One of the members was the sister-in-law of Anthony J. Hilder. His wife's sister. [23] Robert Hafner co-wrote the song "Turn Him Down" with K.C. Reeth. [24] It was previously recorded by Emmett Lord, [25] and Rochell & the Candles [26] Girl group, The Cupons released their version backed with "Be Your Love Tonight", credited to Materlyn And The Cupons. [27] [28] "Turn Her Down" would be included on the VA comp, Girls in the Garage, Vol. 6 which was released on vinyl in 2018. [29] The Cupons' version of the song would later inspire a cover by The Pussywillows, included on their 1988 Spring Fever! album [30] [31] A Japanese punk / garage girl group, MELLViNS recorded it for the B side of their 2015 single, "One Fine Day". [32]
Little Ray Jimenez had a single on the label in 1962 with "Shake! Shout! & Soul!" bw "Soul And Stomp!". [33]
San Luis Obispo group, The Revels started out in high school in the mid-1950s as Gil Serna and the Rockets. Their name was changed to The Revels after Norman Knowles took over as the band leader. [34] [35] Two songs that they are most known for are "Church Key" and "Comanche". [36] "Church Key" was a hit for them in 1960. [37] [38] One of their following singles was "Intoxica" backed with "Tequila" which was released in 1961. [39] Their 1961 song "Comanche", a Robert Hafner composition was first released on Impact 7 in 1961. It has been featured in two film soundtracks. [40] [41] It first appeared as the "Detoured Theme" in The Exiles . [42] [43] [44] In later years, it was included along with several other surf music hits on the soundtrack of the 1994 film, Pulp Fiction . [45]
In 1964, Dr. W.S. McBirnie presented "The Great Debate of 1964" with topics titled The Rumford Act , Convergence, and Coexistence. [46] A 7" 45 RPM single of this speech was released on Impact AU-4X / AU-4. [47]

The Sentinals were a surf rock band from San Luis Obispo, California (1961–1965). The band is notable for a Latino influence in some works, such as "Latin'ia" (1962). Notable band members included Tommy Nuñes, drummer John Barbata and Lee Michaels on keyboards.
The Centurians were an instrumental surf rock band started by Dennis Rose from Newport Beach, California. They were active in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their music has been used in at least two films. They reformed as The Centurions in 1995 and released new material.

One of the songs it recorded, which was associated with the surf genre, was "Surf 'n Stomp" on the Northridge label. The band also recorded for Tony Hilder's Impact label, and even had a release on a label owned by Fred Astaire. They had a minor hit with "Please Be My Love Tonight". The group, though it has been through some changes, still continues today, and has a history that spans six decades.
Robert Hafner was an American record producer and songwriter who, along with Tony Hilder, was responsible for many of the surf records that came out in California in the 1960s including "Vesuvius" and "Intoxica" by The Revels. He also contributed to the music for the film The Exiles. Music historian and author Robert Dalley said that he had a definite place in surf history.
Sutton Records was a budget record label that was sold in outlets other than record shops. The outlets for Sutton were supermarkets, gas stations etc., would be serviced by rack jobbers. In addition to cover versions, the label issued recordings by The Ink Spots, Jesse Crawford and Jimmy Witherspoon.
Dave Myers and The Surftones were a Southern California surf group who are most likely remembered for the few singles they recorded in the 1960s which include their cover of The Revels hit "Church Key" and their time at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, California.
The Viscaynes were an American doo-wop group from Vallejo, California, United States, that released a few singles in the early 1960s. They also had a regional hit with the song "Yellow Moon". One of their members Sylvester Stewart, later known as Sly Stone would front the multi-racial group Sly & the Family Stone. They were unique in being one of the very few integrated doo-wop groups of their time.
Surf's Up! At Banzai Pipeline was a 1963 various artist record album compilation that featured recordings by The Surfaris, Dave Myers and The Surftones, The Soul Kings, Coast Continentals and Jim Waller & The Deltas. It has been re-released a couple of times since.
Rue Barclay was an American Country & Western musician who recorded in the 1940s and in to the 1970s. He was also record producer who produced records for Clarence Jackson, Mutt Poston & The Farm Hands and Red White & The Country Gospel Singers etc.
Norman Knowles is a surf musician, band leader, and record producer from California. He is the composer of several classic surf songs, including as co-writer of the surf classic "Church Key", which was a hit for The Revels. He also has been involved in band management, managing another surf band, The Sentinals. Knowles has made a significant contribution to the surf genre.
Charles Williams Wright is an American singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. He has been a member of various doo wop groups in the late 1950s and early 1960s as well as a solo artist in his own right. He is also the former leader and writer of hits for the group, Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band.

Robert Bartha L. "Billy" Watkins was a gospel and song singer who later became a Christian minister. He was also founder of the gospel singing group, The Zion Travelers. He recorded for the Arwin, Challenge, Chess, Era, Imperial, Kent and Victor labels.
Len Stark was a Philadelphia-based record label owner, composer and producer. He founded the Melron Records label which acts such as William Penn and the Quakers, Essau, Rocky Brown, Bobby Eli, Pheasants and Colly Williams recorded for.
Garrie Emory Thompson was a record label owner, producer and band manager. He ran the Hush and Duane Record labels. he was the producer of "Little Girl" for Syndicate of Sound.
