Three songs on the album are new versions of previously released songs. An early version of "My Mirror" was released on Fuel (2001), while "Warm Sand" and "Room with a View" were originally released on the album Notes (2003).
In 2007, a 2-disc 'Special Edition' of In the Red was released, featuring 11 tracks from an acoustic show at the Copenhagen JazzHouse recorded on April 24, 2006, plus two B-sides. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" is listed as "Don't Think Twice" on the CD's back cover.

"Don't Turn Around" is a popular song written by Albert Hammond and Diane Warren. It was originally recorded by Tina Turner as the B-side to the single "Typical Male" in 1986. Warren is said to have been disappointed that Turner's record company treated the song as a B-side and never included it on one of her albums. The song contains samples of "When the Levee Breaks" written by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham, and performed by Led Zeppelin. Some critics compared the song to Beyoncé's "Ring the Alarm" (2006). The song received a nomination for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in the category of Best Rock Performance. Billboard ranked "Don't Hurt Yourself" at number 61 on their "Billboard's 100 Best Pop Songs of 2016" list.
