The Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film is an award for documentary films. In 1941, the first awards for feature-length documentaries were bestowed as Special Awards to Kukan and Target for Tonight. They have since been bestowed competitively each year, with the exception of 1946. Copies of every winning film are held by the Academy Film Archive.
The 49th Academy Awards were presented Monday, March 28, 1977, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. The ceremonies were presided over by Richard Pryor, Ellen Burstyn, Jane Fonda, and Warren Beatty. Adam is a 1992 British stop-motion clay animated short film written, animated and directed by Peter Lord of Aardman Animations. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short and the BAFTA Film Award for Short Animation in 1992, and won two awards at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 1993. The film, which was distributed by Aardman, is based on the beginning of the Book of Genesis.
Willard Van der Veer was an American cinematographer who won an Academy Award at the 3rd Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for the film With Byrd at the South Pole with Joseph T. Rucker. He started his career as a documentary cameraman and later did a couple episodes of Maverick and the film The Crawling Hand. Mount Van der Veer was named after him. He is the father of Frank Van der Veer, a Hollywood visual effects artist who founded Van Der Veer Photo Effects and won, in 1977, a Special Achievement Academy Award for the 1976 version of King Kong.

Andre R. Guttfreund is a Salvadoran film director, producer and filmmaker. He is better known for the production of the 1976 short film In the Region of Ice, for which he received an Oscar at the 1977 Academy Awards with Peter Werner for Best Live Action Short Film, becoming the first and so far only Central American to receive an Oscar.
