The Indian Air Force Band, known officially as No. 1 Air Force Band is a full-time military band of the Indian Air Force. It is considered to be the primary musical unit of the IAF, currently stationed in Jalahalli. Outside the symphony orchestra, other military ensembles have included the following: parade band, jazz ensemble, and vocalist group. It falls under the command of the Directorate of Organisation of the IAF. [1]

History

It was the first Indian air force band to be formed, being established on 10 June 1944 under the name of the RIAF Central Band. [2] [3] [4] It was based in Kohat and consisted of one officer accompanied by 47 airmen. Its composition was order by Wing Commander G.R. Bowler, the then Under Secretary at the War Department of British India. [5] It gave its first performance at a military parade in Ambala on 13 February 1946. [6] After the Independence of India occurred, it came to Jalahalli in Bangalore in 1947. [7] In 2005, the band became the first Asian member of the International Military Music Society based in Norway.

Air Warriors Symphony Orchestra

The Air Warrior Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) is the concert band unit of the IAF Band. Formed in June 2002, the AWSO consists of hand-picked musicians from the seven IAF Bands across the country. [8] [9] The AWSO has performed at many concerts across the world in countries like France, Italy, Germany, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh as well as at venues such as India Gate and Vijay Chowk. [10] It also has taken part in domestic events such as the IAF Platinum Jubilee Tattoo in March 2007. [11] In 2014, the AWSO, under the direction of Squadron Leader Gopalakrishnan Jayachandran, engaged in a joint performance with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. [12] 5 years later in 2019, the band performed for the first time with the visiting United States Air Force Band of the Pacific. [13] In 2007, the ASWO taught Hindu compositions to musicians from the Afghan National Army, during which training was provided to 10 soldiers for six months in Bangalore. [14]

The title of "Air Warrior" is also reserved for the Air Warrior Drill Team.

Structured events

The band performs at Presentation of Colours as well as the annual Delhi Republic Day parade on the Rajpath. In the latter parade, the band has come in a 75-member contingent and has been led by Warrant Officer Ashok Kumar for the last 12 years. [15] [16] It also performs at the Beating Retreat on Vijay Chowk, performing marches such as the Air Force Colour, Inspirato, and Subroto. [17] It frequently performs at during State visits to New Delhi at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, hosted by the President of India. It has been present at prestigious international events in Germany, Finland, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The team is based at Bidar Air Force Station in Karnataka and has performed numerous demonstrations. The squadron was initially composed of the HAL HJT-16 Kiran Mk.2 trainer aircraft. The team was suspended in February 2011 and was re-established with BAE Hawk Mk.132 aircraft in 2015.

Sarang is an aerobatic air display team of the Indian Air Force. The unit flies five modified HAL Dhruv helicopters. The unit is based out of Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

Sulur Air Force Station is an air base of the Indian Air Force located at Sulur near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and is India's second largest air base after Hindon AFS. It is the base which is responsible for protection of India's sea area. It is the only base in India which handles both fighter and transport flights at one location; no other base in India is equipped to do so. It is also the only IAF base in India to have all Departments at one location: fighters, carrier planes, carrier helicopters, attack helicopters, a repair and overhauling depot, TETTRA school, Garud Force, Air Force Hospital, Southern Command Sub Headquarters, & ECHS. It is a former Royal Navy and Indian Navy base.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian military bands</span>

The Indian military bands consists of musicians from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Indian military bands regularly participate in international festivals and take part in celebrations dedicated to various national events. These bands are permanent participants in the Delhi Republic Day parade on the Kartavya Path. Today, the Indian Armed Forces have more than 50 military brass bands and 400 pipe bands and corps of drums. A Tri-Services Band refers to a joint Indian Armed Forces military band that performs together as a unit. At the Spasskaya Tower Military Music Festival and Tattoo in Moscow, the band consisted of 7 officers and 55 musicians. The Military Music Wing of the Army Education Corps is the principal educational institution of the armed forces that provides instruction to musicians of all ranks. Instruction is also provided by the Military Music Training Center and the Indian Navy School of Music.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian Army Chief's Band</span> Military unit

The Indian Army Chief's Band is the Indian Army's full-time music band. It was founded in 1990 as the official band of the Indian Army and the foremost in the armed forces. It also, as its name implies, represents the Chief of the Army Staff at events involving the COAS's presence. The band represents India in most important state events held in the Indian capital. It was raised in 1990 with bandsmen being drawn multiple Indian military bands in order to "retain the true representation of the entire nation in one band". In April 2011, a string section was added, consisting of cellos, violas and violins, elevating it to a symphony orchestra comprising 72 musicians. Outside of the Indian Army, it has also represented the Indian nation at various military music festivals in France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and Bangladesh.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Air Warrior Drill Team</span>

The Air Warrior Drill Team "Subroto" (AWDT) is the ceremonial drill team of Indian Air Force, being a platoon-sized formation. It was founded in 2004 as the first of precision exhibition drill unit of its kind in the Indian Armed Forces. It falls under the command of the Directorate of Organisation of the IAF. This unit commonly performs during IAF events as well as national events such as Air Force Day Parade on 8 October as well as the Independence Day celebrations on 15 August. Their official motto is Drill to Thrill. Its 28 members have also performed at venues such as Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre and Tezpur Airport as well as performed during the IAF Presentation of Colours and the Subroto Cup. The unit uses Lee–Enfield rifles with fixed bayonets and performs routines that include complex spins and tosses.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vijayalakshmi Ramanan</span> Surgeon; Indian Air Force Officer (1924–2020)

Vijayalakshmi Ramanan VSM was an Indian physician and career army officer. She was the first woman to be commissioned as an Indian Air Force officer, and served as a surgeon in several military hospitals in India. She was a recipient of the army's Vishisht Seva Medal in 1977 and retired as a wing commander in 1979.
