Indigenouism

Indigenouism is a visual arts movement that promotes environmental protection by utilizing Indigenous Materials [1] [2] as media in artistic creations. It emphasizes more on the aesthetic value, instead of focusing on socio-cultural themes often used in literary themes, theatre, and other related arts. Using locally sourced media also promotes the culture and tradition of an artist's stomping ground, especially when artists come from more remote areas.

Etymology

Indigenouism, in general, refers to the work of art by a local artist who uses raw materials available immediately in the area. It is a movement by artists and their works of art using Indigenous Materials for their Masterpieces. It includes activities and creations by those who have felt an inclination toward social and cultural isolation and traditional forms of art. The term Indigenouism comes from the word Indigenous, which refers to things that are naturally occurring in a specific place or area; and indigenous or native people, those who live in a specific place or area (often those who live in remote areas).

The term Indigenouism was coined by Elito Circa [3] who led the Indigenouism movement, by showcasing his paintings and introducing his methods to other artists in 1993. Through this, many of the local artists in his town, even throughout the province, adopted prominent and primary agricultural products as media for their paintings. The movement also advocated for artists in other towns to use the readily available products in their areas, thereby promoting each town’s unique identity.

Another term, Indigenism on the other hand, which refers to ideologies associated with indigenous peoples, is used differently by various scholars and activists, and can be used purely descriptively or carry political connotations. George Kubler's (1985) used the term indigenismo to describe an ideological and stylistic perspective in twentieth-century Latin American art; he underscored the modern nature of this concept as a particularly historical mindset and, less strictly, as anartistic style. It signifies a contemporary attitude in modern Latin American art that concerns itself with the “retention of pre-conquest styles”, as in the murals of Mexican painter Diego Rivera. More importantly, it draws impetus from a twentieth-century expansion of exact knowledge about antiquity in the Americas and seeks to restore Preconquest civilis-ations to “symbolic authority” (Bakewell, 1995, p. 24; Kubler, 1985, pp. 75–76; Ramos, 1998, pp. 5–7). It reflects a desire in modern or modernised societies to be deeply movedby an “unremembered past” (Cameron and Gatewood, 2003, pp. 55–56). [4]

Artist advocates

Some areas are less endowed than others, hence making the local people more recreative and resourceful, experimenting and producing their own materials to be used for their talents and hobbies and other art-related creations more particularly paintings. In the late 20th century, many local artists in the Philippines has started making their own ways as painters who also adopts Indigenouism. Movement

In 1998, a group of artists and mountaineers led by Amangpintor wanted to protect the environment against global warming by supporting the advocacy of using indigenous raw materials for painting and at the same time address the issue of lack of materials for painting due to poverty. Creating brushes out of strands of hair, extract from fruits, vegetables and trees are very significant discoveries and experiences of Amangpintor that according to him, this should be taught and shared to the children of new generation especially in the rural areas.

Rhea Santos-de Guzman is a Filipina broadcast journalist, television host, and newscaster currently based in Canada. She is known for co-anchoring GMA Network's morning show Unang Hirit and hosting several news and public affairs programs including Reporter's Notebook and Tunay na Buhay. After 19 years of being a broadcast journalist, she left the Philippines to study and eventually resume her profession in Canada.

Maria Pia Concepcion Arcangel-Halili, publicly known as Pia Arcangel, is a Filipina television newscaster and journalist in the Philippines.

Elito Circa Filipino painter

Elito Villaflor Circa, better known as "Amangpintor", is a famous Filipino painter and internationally known folk artist, who paints using indigenous human hair and blood fluids with mythologism and mythicalism subject matters. He was the "First Hair and Blood Painter" of his generation and his signature subject is Legend of Minggan. A father of Indigenouism Art, upholding and advocating Contemporary Indigenous Philippine Art and also popularized Hand Painting performances done within 5 to 10 minutes in a canvas of 432 square inches using the three primary colors.

Historical markers of the Philippines

Historical markers are installed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in the Philippines and places abroad that signify important events, persons, structures, and institutions in Philippine national and local histories. The plaques themselves are permanent signs installed by the NHCP in publicly visible locations on buildings, monuments, or in special locations. Local municipalities and cities can also install markers of figures and events of local significance. Though they may have the permission of the NHCP, these markers are barred from using the seal of the Republic of the Philippines.

<i>Forevermore</i> (TV series)

Forevermore is a 2014 Philippine romantic drama television series directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina, starring Enrique Gil and Liza Soberano, together with an ensemble cast. The series aired on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida evening block and worldwide on The Filipino Channel from October 27, 2014, to May 22, 2015, replacing Ikaw Lamang.

Maria Perpetua Concepcion Del Rosario-Escudero, professionally known as Connie Sison, is a Filipino broadcast journalist, reporter, host and news anchor. She is best known for being the news anchor of Balitanghali on GMA News TV now (GTV), being one of the hosts of GMA Network's morning show Unang Hirit, and Pinoy M.D.. She also hosts the radio version of Pinoy M.D., Pinoy M.D. sa Dobol B that airs on DZBB. Her hosting skills in Pinoy M.D. got her a Bantog award for Media Practitioner in Television given by Department of Science and Technology in 2018.

Whang-od Filipino tattoo artist

Whang-od Oggay, also known as Maria Oggay, is a Filipina tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga, Philippines. She is often described as the "last" and oldest mambabatok and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.

Michael Bengwayan is a Filipino environmental activist best known for his advocacy of using the Petroleum nut as an alternative bio-fuel in the Philippines, and his involvement with advocacies to save trees from being cut, notably the Save 182 Movement which petitioned to stop the earth-balling 182 trees at Luneta Hill, Baguio, by mall developer SM, and the campaign to stop the cutting of 1,200 trees along the Manila North Road, in the towns of Binalonan and Pozorrubio, Pangasinan.

Marie Grace Michelle Bade Umali–Tima, widely known as Mariz Umali, is a Filipina television news anchor and journalist. She is known for being the main newscaster of the weekend edition of GMA News TV's Balitanghali. She finished broadcast communications course at the University of the Philippines Diliman but she started as a pharmacy student. She started to work at GMA Network as a researcher and producer of news content for the 2001 Philippine general elections. Besides Balintanghali, she also appeared as host or documentarian in other television shows such as I-Witness, Out of Control and Born to Be Wild. She also appears as one of the host of the Unang Hirit, GMA Network's morning show

Samahang Makasining is a widespread art organization in different universities and municipalities and also the largest collegiate semi-fraternity in the Philippines. It is organized to promote art awareness among the youth and develop their innate talents. It also aims to provide art community service, art related youth development, and social development opportunities for college students in the Philippines. It is composed not only of young aspirant artists but also of national art professionals, environmentalists, students and out-of-school youths. established in 1982. The Indigenous games or Laro ng Lahi was coined and popularized by this group with the help of National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Jordan Mang-osan is a Filipino Indigenouism artist who harnesses the power of the sun to create pyrography drawings. Pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks.

Ramon H. Lopez in San Jose, Nueva Ecija, is a Filipino painter and Indigenouism artist known for using rust as medium for his painting.

Indigenous materials are materials that are naturally and locally found in a specific place such as timbers, canes,grass, palms, and rattan. Other indigenous raw materials in the country that are commonly known and used creatively in crafts and decoration are capiz, pearls, corals, and seashells, being an archipelago naturally abundant in beaches and marine resources.

Luane Dy Filipina actress and host

Luzia Jannie Estrella Dy-Gonzales, widely known as Luane Dy, is a Filipino showbiz television personality, model and actress. She is known for being the host of GMA Network's morning television show Unang Hirit where she, along with her co-hosts, received the Best Morning Show Hosts award during the 29th PMPC Star Awards for Television in 2015. She also presents showbiz news on Balitanghali and used to anchor "Chika Minute," the entertainment news segment of 24 Oras Weekend.

Susan Enriquez

Susan Sevillo, known professionally as SusanEnriquez, is a Fiipino journalist, radio and TV news reporter and host for GMA Network, GMA News TV, and DZBB.
