Ingrid Kosar (born 1948) is an American inventor and creator of the thermal bag.
Kosar grew up in Des Plaines, Illinois. Her father was an accountant and ran his own company. He died when she was young, and her mother turned the property into a beauty salon. [1] Losing her father made her passionate about preserving food. [2] Kosar attended Northern Illinois University, where she majored in journalism. [2]
Kosar started her career as a buyer for an engineering company. [1] She says that at that age she was eating a lot of pizza. [1] At the time, Domino's Pizza dominated the United States pizza delivery market, and their innovative new pizza box was keeping pizza secure. [1] Kosar was inspired by a padded cotton lunch bag she had seen at a craft fair. She was challenged by Domino's Pizza to create a bag that could keep a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. [1]
Kosar invented a thermal bag used to keep pizza warm. [3] [4] [5] She launched her insulated pizza bag company, "Thermal Bags by Ingrid", in 1983. [6] She ensured the bag was big enough to hold multiple cartons, flexible enough to handle without difficulty, and able to endure any spillages. [1] Her 1984 patent application describes the bag as "soft-sided thermally insulated carrying cases". The bag combined a breathable, food-safe layer of polyester, 1,000 denier Cordura nylon and a thin nylon lining. [1] It incorporated Thinsulate fabric. [7] The breathable layer ensures steam can escape so that the crust stays crispy. [1] Domino's Pizza were Kosar's largest customer. [8] The same bag technology was used by NASA, who deployed the bag in outer space to study crystalization. It was listed as the world's largest pizza bag by the Guinness World Records in 2000. [2]
Kosar's patents expired in the early 2000s, and cheaper bags from China started to infiltrate the market. [1] Kosar filed for personal bankruptcy in 2010, but managed to maintain the company, and work her way out of bankruptcy within four years. [1] She has continued to develop thermal bags for a range of customers, including a European stem cell bank. She created a series of covers for bun racks for bakers, with customers including Panera Bread. [1]

A sleeping bag is an insulated covering for a person, essentially a lightweight quilt that can be closed with a zipper or similar means to form a tube, which functions as lightweight, portable bedding in situations where a person is sleeping outdoors. It is also commonly used indoors for people who do not have beds or at sleepovers. Its primary purpose is to provide warmth and thermal insulation through its synthetic or down insulation. It also typically has a water-resistant or water-repellent cover that protects, to some extent, against wind chill and light precipitation, but a tent is usually used in addition to a sleeping bag, as it performs those functions better. The bottom surface also provides some cushioning, but a sleeping pad or camp cot is usually used in addition to that purpose. The bottom surface of a sleeping bag may be moderately water repellent, but a plastic tarp or groundsheet is often used to protect against moist ground.

They can be divided into the reusable type, which works as a thermal mass and requires freezing, or the instant type, which cools itself down using chemicals but can only be used once. The instant type is generally limited to medical use as a cold compress to alleviate the pain of minor injuries, while the reusable type is both used as a cold compress and to keep food cool in portable coolers or in insulated shipping containers to keep products cool during transport.

The pizza box or pizza package is a folding packaging box usually made of corrugated fiberboard in which hot pizzas are stored for take-out. The pizza box also makes home delivery and takeaway substantially easier. The pizza box has to be highly resistant, cheap, stackable, thermally insulated to regulate humidity and suitable for food transportation. In addition, it provides space for advertising. The pizza packages differ from those of frozen pizzas, which contain the frozen product in heat-sealed plastic foils as is the case with much frozen food.
The presence of pizza restaurant chains has contributed to a significant increase in pizza consumption in Mainland China and Hong Kong. This also had an effect of introducing cheese as a culinary ingredient and everyday food in China, which was relatively uncommon in Chinese cuisine prior to the emergence of pizza chains.
