Inhabitat is a blog focused on green design and lifestyle topics. The website covers the future of design as well as technology and architectural projects that emphasize energy efficiency, sustainability, and connection to the surrounding environment.

History

Inhabitat was founded by Columbia University architectural graduate student Jill Fehrenbacher in 2005. [1] In a blog post, Fehrenbacher described quitting her job in digital marketing to go to architectural school, and then dropping out to focus on growing the site. [2] "I wanted to forge my voice in the design world and get to know the designers and thought-leaders that were actually making, building and creating amazing things in the real world," she wrote in 2011. [3]

By 2007, the site had a full-time salaried managing editor and around a dozen contributors who earned a nominal fee for their work. [4] Inhabitat also launched a child-focused site called Inhabitots and an online shop. [5] In 2009, Inhabitat raised more than $500,000 in financing from a European investment company. [5]

The Los Angeles-based media company Internet Brands acquired Inhabitat in September 2011, with Fehrenbacher agreeing to continue as the site's manager and editor-in-chief. [6] In June 2017, Fehrenbacher announced she was stepping down from running Inhabitat to focus on her family. [2]

Recognition

In early 2009, the New York Times featured Fehrenbacher and Inhabitat in its Home & Garden section. [7] Time magazine put Inhabitat on "The Green List 100" in 2009 in the Websites category. [8] Mother Nature Network (MNN) named the site to its list of eight influential green websites in 2010. [9]

Gothamist LLC was the operator, or in some cases franchisor, of eight city-centric websites that focused on news, events, food, culture, and other local coverage from 2003 to 2018. It was founded in 2003 by Jake Dobkin and Jen Chung. In March 2017, Joe Ricketts, owner of DNAinfo, acquired the company and, in November 2017, the websites were temporarily shut down after the newsroom staff voted to unionize. In February 2018, it was announced that New York Public Radio, KPCC and WAMU had acquired Gothamist, LAist and DCist, respectively. Chicagoist was purchased by Chicago-born rapper Chance the Rapper in July 2018.

Mother Nature Network (mnn.com) was a news and information website focused on sustainability and ranked by Alexa Internet as the most visited for-profit website in the world in its environmental category. It was labeled "the green CNN" by Time magazine, "green machine" by the Associated Press, and "best of the breed" by Fast Company. Founded in 2009 by former marketing executive Joel Babbit and Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, it was the flagship property of Narrative Content Group, whose equity partners included CNN and Discovery Inc.

It is funded by trade unions, adverts, and individual donors. LabourList started as a weblog with reader comments, but in February 2019 the ability for readers to write comments was removed.

She became a model in New York City, and insisted on only modeling clothing made from organic or recycled materials. These principles cost her work, but gained her notice and the title of world's first "eco-model".
