Institute of Economics, Polish Academy of Sciences (Polish : Instytut Nauk Ekonomicznych PAN, abbreviation: INE PAN) is a public Polish research center for economic and business studies. It was founded on December 10, 1980. Its offices are located in the Staszic Palace and the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. Organizationally, it is part of the Polish Academy of Sciences. [1] The Institute of Economics has the rights to bestow doctoral degrees, habilitation degrees and to initiate the professorship procedure. Some of its MBA and DBA prominent programs are the most modern programs in Poland which are internationally recognized.

History

The PAS Institute of Economics commenced its activities in 1980. Its research at that time concentrated on problems related to socialist planned economies. During the 80s IE PAS was actively engaged in the promotion of independent thinking on economic issues. It significantly contributed to the success of Polish economic reforms after the collapse of the socialist system in 1989.

In the 90s the Institute was reorganized and took active part in the analysis and evaluation of free market economic developments in Poland. At present there are about forty scholars and researchers working in four departments of the Institute: Microeconomics, Economic Policy, Institutional Economics and the World Economy. Many of them have occupied important posts in the Cabinet of Poland, Parliament (Sejm), the National Bank of Poland, the Polish Monetary Policy Council, the European Commission and the World Bank.

Research and Other Activities

IE PAS’s main research areas are:

- contemporary economic theory,

- economic policy,

- analysis, evaluation and strategic studies of the Polish economy, and

- analysis of the world economy and European integration.

IE PAS also offers forecasts concerning growth and development of the Polish economy, and publishes a number of analyses of Polish firms. The Institute also publishes the bilingual quarterly Studia Ekonomiczne - Economic Studies.

IE PAS maintains cooperation with leading institutions in various countries, e.g. the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies; the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences; the Institute of World Economy of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.

IE PAS also runs several postgraduate, MBA and doctoral programs in business and economics. Together with the National Bank of Poland the Institute offers specialized studies for economic journalists. [2]

Professor Barbara Błaszcyk is Chairman of the Scientific Council of IE PAS. Urszula Skorupska serves as the Director of the Institute.

Oskar R. Lange

Oskar Ryszard Lange was a Polish economist and diplomat. He is best known for advocating the use of market pricing tools in socialist systems and providing a model of market socialism. He responded to the economic calculation problem proposed by Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek by claiming that managers in a centrally-planned economy would be able to monitor supply and demand through increases and declines in inventories of goods, and advocated the nationalization of major industries. SGH Warsaw School of Economics

SGH Warsaw School of Economics is the oldest business school in Poland.

Władysław Markiewicz was a Polish sociologist; professor of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań since 1966, and Warsaw University since 1972, director of the Western Institute in Poznań in years 1966–1973, member of Polish Academy of Sciences since 1972.

Danuta Hübner Polish economist and politician

Danuta Maria Hübner, née Młynarska is a Polish politician and Diplomat and Economist and Member of the European Parliament. She has served as European Commissioner for Regional Policy from 22 November 2004 until 4 July 2009, when she resigned to become a Member of European Parliament for the Civic Platform. In 2012, Professor Hübner became a member of the International Honorary Council of the European Academy of Diplomacy.

Kraków University of Economics

Krakow University of Economics is one of the five Polish public economics universities. CUE came into existence in 1925. It is the biggest university of economic sciences in Poland. Kraków University of Economics is one of the three largest universities in Kraków, after Jagiellonian University and the AGH University of Science and Technology. The motto and mission of the university in Latin is "Rerum cognoscere causas et valorem" Its 17-acre (69,000 m2) campus is in the vicinity of historical medieval Old Town of Kraków and easily accessible both on foot or by public transportation. In addition to the main campus in Kraków, the university has seven Remote Teaching Centers in the cities of the region.

Grzegorz Kołodko

Grzegorz Witold Kołodko is a distinguished professor of economics. A key architect of Polish economic reforms. He is the author of New Pragmatism original paradigmatic and heterodox theory of economics. University lecturer, researcher, the author of numerous academic books and research papers. As Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance of Poland in 2002-2003 he played a leading role in achieving the entry of Poland into the European Union. Holding the same position in 1994-1997, Kolodko led Poland to the OECD. The founder and Director of TIGER – Transformation, Integration and Globalization Economic Research at the Kozminski University in Warsaw. Consultant to such international organizations as the IMF, World Bank, UN, and the OECD. Member of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities, Member of Academia Europaea. Foreign Member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Non-resident Senior Fellow, Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China, Beijing, Professor HUST, Huangzhou University of Science and Technology, Wuhan; Distinguished Professor of Emerging Markets Institute, Beijing Normal University, Beijing. He is a globetrotter who visited 170 countries and Antarctica, and a marathon runner who has completed 50 runs. 

Edward Lipiński

Edward Lipiński was a Polish economist, intellectual, social critic and human rights advocate. During the almost seven decades of his career, he held a series of academic and government advisory positions, founded several organizations, published books and essays on economic policy. His works concerned business cycles, growth theory, history of economic thought and other areas of economics. Lipiński was a fighter for Polish independence and a socialist activist in the Second Polish Republic. In the Polish People's Republic, Lipiński was an influential Marxian economist and a long-term member of the communist party. Outspoken in his criticism of government policies, he became active in opposition circles.

Lena Kolarska-Bobińska

Professor Lena Barbara Kolarska-Bobińska is a Polish sociologist, academic and political figure. Most recently, she served as the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education from 2013 to 2015. In order to take the appointment, she resigned as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), where she represented the Lublin region from the Civic Platform Party list from 2009.

SWPS University

SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities or simply SWPS University is a private non-profit university in Poland established in 1996 by three professors of Psychology, Andrzej Eliasz, Zbigniew Pietrasiński and Janusz Reykowski.

Seweryn Chajtman – a Polish scientist, engineer, teacher of organization and management in the industry, pioneered Computer Science in Poland. Creator of the Alternative Theory of Organization and Management.

Kazimierz Łaski

Kazimierz Łaski was a Polish-Austrian economist. During the antisemitic purge of 1968 Łaski had to leave Poland and moved to Austria, where he worked for the rest of his life and was widely recognized as a major contributor to Post-Keynesian economics.

Witold Orłowski

Witold Maciej Orłowski is a Polish professor of economics. He is Director of the Warsaw University of Technology Business School and a Member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Council. Beside, he acts as Chief Economic Adviser for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Poland. In 2011 he was appointed Special Adviser (budget) to the European Commission. Currently, he is the Rector of Group of Universities.

The Kosciuszko Institute is a Polish independent, non-profit, non-governmental think tank and research institute established in Kraków in 2000. The KI's areas of expertise include European Union's and Polish institutions and law, economy, energy and climate policy, security, defence and international relations.

Zenon Kulpa is a Polish computer scientist, and Assistant Professor at Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of Polish Academy of Sciences, known for his work on diagrammatic representation and diagrammatic reasoning.

The Bohdan Dobrzański Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences is a public research and higher education institution dedicated to the study of agrophysics, agricultural sciences and research on physical problems of agriculture. The Institute publishes two English-language scientific journals, the quarterly Acta Agrophysica and the semi-annual Polish Journal of Soil Science.

Halina Weronika Wasilewska-Trenkner was a Polish economist, academic, and finance minister.
