Institute of Social Welfare and Research [1] is one of the oldest institutes of the University of Dhaka. [2] [ failed verification ] It is the apex institution for the social work education in Bangladesh. It offers Graduation, Post-Graduation, M.Phil. and PhD degrees to students in social welfare/social work.
The institute is situated in the New Market area in the capital, adjacent to the gate-3 of Border Guard Bangladesh headquarters. It is situated in the same premises of two female dormitories of the University of Dhaka, Begum Fajilatunnessa Mujib Hall and Bangladesh- Kuwait Maitree Hall and detached from the main campus of the University of Dhaka.
The College of Social Welfare and Research Centre was established in 1958 as a constituent college of the University of Dhaka.[ citation needed ]
Later in 1973, the college was made an institute of the University of Dhaka and renamed as the Institute of Social Welfare and Research. [3] A separate premises was allocated to the institute, where the academic building with one men's and one girls' hostel for the institutes' students were constructed by the end of 1974, where after the academic activity of the Institute commenced in the said premises.[ citation needed ]
The academic building was attached with a large open field within the premises, which became the only after-noon recreational place for inhabitant of the adjacent residential locality New Paltan. In the years 1997 and 2008 two four storied girls' students halls of the Dhaka University namely Bangladesh Kuwait Maitree Hall and Begum Fajilatunnesa Mujib Hall respectively, were constructed in that field covering the whole area. This had made the entire premises a congested area, destroying the earlier beauty of the premises.[ citation needed ]

Social Welfare Alumni Association is a platform of the former students of the institute. Professor M A Momen is the president and Jahangir Murshed is the General Secretary of the association.

Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, commonly known as Begum Rokeya, was a prominent Bengali feminist thinker, writer, educator and political activist from British India. She is widely regarded as a pioneer of women's liberation in Bangladesh and India.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh, was assassinated along with most of his family members during the early hours of 15 August 1975 by a group of Bangladesh Army personnel who invaded his residence as part of a coup d'état. The Minister of Commerce, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, immediately took control and proclaimed himself head of an interim government from 15 August to 6 November 1975; he was in turn succeeded by Chief Justice Abu Sayem. The assassination marked the first direct military intervention in Bangladesh's civilian administration. Lawrence Lifschultz characterized this incident as an outcome of the Cold War between the United States-influenced Pakistan and the Soviet Union-influenced India. 15 August is annually observed as National Mourning Day, a commemorative day in Bangladesh.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is a graduate research university for medical science in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The university was established in 1965. It offers postgraduate degrees in various medical specialties. These programs encompass MPhil, MPH, MD, MS, PhD, and various post-graduate diploma degrees. It does not offer undergraduate MBBS or BDS degrees.
Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a Bangladeshi politician. He was one of the nephews of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. He was the founder of Mujib Bahini Bangladesh Liberation Force-BLF one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.
Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) is the 12th oldest public university and second science and technology specialized PhD granting public university in Bangladesh. It is named after the political leader Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani. The medium of instruction is English. Every year, 925 students are enrolled in undergraduate programs at the university, and there are around 243 teachers. In 2021, MBSTU was ranked as the top research university in Bangladesh by Scopus-SCImago institution ranking. In 2020, MBSTU was ranked first among all the universities of Bangladesh by Scimago Institutions Rankings.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) is a public agricultural university in Bangladesh, established in 1998. It was the first Center of Excellence Graduate Agricultural Institute in Bangladesh emphasizing research and extension. It is located at South Salna, in Gazipur District. It is 9.5 kilometres (5.9 mi) from Gazipur Chowrasta, just east of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
The Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, formerly Rangpur University, is a public research university in Rangpur, Bangladesh. Founded in 2008, it is the only generally categorized university in Rangpur Division and the second public university in the region. It was named after the feminist writer and social worker Begum Rokeya.

The Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka(Bengali: শিক্ষা ও গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউট, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়),, is the oldest and biggest institution for the study of education in Bangladesh. The institute of Education and Research was established as the first institute of the University of Dhaka with the technical and financial assistance of United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It is run by the Second Statute Under President's Order of 1973 and governed by a separate Board of Governors headed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university.
