The International Blantyre Cancer Centre (IBCC) is a private, specialised, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Thomson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation. It is the first and only free-standing cancer treatment and research centre in Malawi's Southern Region. [1] [2] The centre was opened by Lazarus Chakwera, the President of Malawi, on 5 March 2024. [3]

The facility is located in the neighborhood known as Nyambadwe, in the city of Blantyre, in the Southern Region of Malawi. [4]

Overview

IBCC is a cancer treatment, research, and teaching centre, owned and operated by the Thomson and Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation. The facility offers 60 inpatient beds. On offer are screening and diagnostic services on an outpatient basis. Inpatient services include both chemotherapy and radiotherapy services. [4]

The cancer centre was established by business mogul Thomson Mpinganjira, in memory of his late wife, Barbara Mpingajira, who died of cancer in a South African hospital in January 2019. [5] [6]

Thomson Mpinganjira is a wealthy Malawian, who is credited with the founding of FDH Bank, a Malawian commercial bank among other financial investments. He stated that the medical equipment at IBCC was sourced from Belgium. [7]

In March 2024, the Malawi Voice reported that the cancer centre is owned jointly 50/50 by the Thomson & Barbara Mpinganjira Foundation and the Roman Catholic charity organisation Organismo Mundial de Cursillos de Cristiandad (OMCC), based in Belgium and Luxembourg. [2]

Facilities and cost

The centre is equipped with modern cancer screening and diagnostic equipment. It also offers chemotherapy and radiation services to both inpatients and outpatients on a daily basis. The cost of construction and equipment acquisition is calculated at about €10 million. [8]

Malawi National Cancer Centre (MNCC), also Malawi National Cancer Treatment Centre (MNCTC), is a public, specialized, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Malawi Ministry of Health. Since 2020, the facility's administrative department is temporarily housed within Kamuzu Central Hospital, in Nangwagwa, in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Construction is ongoing for a stand-alone cancer unit separate but adjacent to the hospital. This is the first and only cancer treatment unit in the country.

Bon Kalindo also known as Winiko is a Malawian activist, comedian, politician and actor. In 2023, Kalindo protested against the Malawi Congress Party whose president is Lazarus Chakwera, the current president of Malawi, to step down out of presidency due to devaluation of the country's currency. He was arrested several times. On 30 August 2023, he was arrested and released out of the prison the same day.

Skeffa Chimoto is a Malawian musician and a member of the "Real Sounds" band. His debut sophomore album "Nabola Moyo " was well received and critically acclaimed, topping music charts all over Malawi. His other album ‘Ndife Amodzi’ has one of the best tracks, the kind that the music industry has been craving for in ‘Ndakusowa’, ‘Sungamchose’, title track ‘Ndife Amodzi’ and ‘Ulendo’. He has collaborated with various artists such as Dalisoul from Zambia, Billy Kaunda, Allelluya Band and Katelele Ching'oma.
