History

CAETS was founded in 1978 by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Engineering of Mexico  [ es ], the US National Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. As of 2022, CAETS has 31 member academies. [1] CAETS is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation in the District of Columbia, US. [2] From 1985 till 2000 the name “Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS)” was used, and upon 2000, the current name “International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, Inc. (CAETS) is in usage. [3]

Organization

CAETS has Council (meets annually), Board of Directors and Executive Committee. [4]

The CAETS Board of Directors includes four Officers (President: Denis Ranque; President-Elect: Neven Duić; Past-President: Manuel Solanet; Secretary/Treasurer: Ruth David) together with eight additional members elected by the Council to serve two year terms. [5]

Statements

In October 2007, CAETS issued a Statement on Environment and Sustainable Growth:

As reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), most of the observed global warming since the mid-20th century is very likely due to human-produced emission of greenhouse gases and this warming will continue unabated if present anthropogenic emissions continue or, worse, expand without control.
CAETS, therefore, endorses the many recent calls to decrease and control greenhouse gas emissions to an acceptable level as quickly as possible. [6]

In following years, CAETS has issued statements as listed: [7]

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), also known as the National Academies, is a congressionally chartered organization that serves as the collective scientific national academy of the United States. The name is used interchangeably in two senses: (1) as an umbrella term or parent organization for its three sub-divisions that operate as quasi-independent honorific learned society member organizations known as the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM); and (2) as the brand for studies and reports issued by the unified operating arm of the three academies originally known as the National Research Council (NRC). The National Academies also serve as public policy advisors, research institutes, think tanks, and public administration consultants on issues of public importance or on request by the government.

A national academy is an organizational body, usually operating with state financial support and approval, that co-ordinates scholarly research activities and standards for academic disciplines, and serve as public policy advisors, research institutes, think tanks, and public administration consultants for governments or on issues of public importance, most frequently in the sciences but also in the humanities. Typically the country's learned societies in individual disciplines will liaise with or be coordinated by the national academy. National academies play an important organisational role in academic exchanges and collaborations between countries.
