The International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals (often shortened to ISGOTT) is a standard code of practice for the safe operation of Oil tankers and Oil terminals. [1] Published by Witherbys, it is a joint publication produced by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH). [2]
It was first published in 1978. ISGOTT has its roots in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the shipping industry recognised the need for comprehensive guidelines to ensure the safety of oil tankers and terminals. During this time, there were increasing concerns about the safety and environmental risks associated with the transportation and handling of oil. In response to these concerns, the ICS and OCIMF collaborated to develop a guide that would establish standardised safety practices for the industry. The guide aimed to address various aspects of safety, including cargo handling, emergency response, personnel safety, and environmental protection. Over the years, ISGOTT has undergone several revisions and updates to incorporate advancements in technology, changes in regulations, and improvements in industry best practices.
A sixth edition of ISGOTT was published in June 2020. [3] [4]
The publication provides information to ship-owners, seafarers and oil companies on best practice operating practices, national and international legislation, occupational safety and health and ship design relating to oil tankers and Oil terminals.
The collaborative effort between ICS, OCIMF and IAPH in developing ISGOTT emphasises the importance of cooperation between shipping companies and oil companies to establish and promote international safety standards. The guide has become a widely recognised and respected resource in the maritime and oil industries, providing a common framework for safe operations. [2]
A double-hulled tanker refers to an oil tanker which has a double hull. They reduce the likelihood of leaks occurring compared to single-hulled tankers, and their ability to prevent or reduce oil spills led to double hulls being standardized for oil tankers and other types of ships including by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships or MARPOL Convention. After the Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster in Alaska in 1989, the US government required all new oil tankers built for use between US ports to be equipped with a full double hull.

The authority has jurisdiction over Australia's exclusive economic zone which covers an area of 11,000,000 square kilometres (4,200,000 sq mi). AMSA maintains Australia's shipping registries: the general and the international shipping registers.
An oil terminal is an industrial facility for the storage of oil, petroleum and petrochemical products, and from which these products are transported to end users or other storage facilities. An oil terminal typically has a variety of above or below ground tankage; facilities for inter-tank transfer; pumping facilities; loading gantries for filling road tankers or barges; ship loading/unloading equipment at marine terminals; and pipeline connections.
A ship classification society or ship classification organisation is a non-governmental organization that establishes and maintains technical standards for the construction and operation of ships and offshore structures. Classification societies certify that the construction of a vessel comply with relevant standards and carry out regular surveys in service to ensure continuing compliance with the standards. Currently, more than 50 organizations describe their activities as including marine classification, twelve of which are members of the International Association of Classification Societies.

Other publications might cover topics such as seamanship and cargo operations. In the UK, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office, the Witherby Publishing Group and the Nautical Institute provide numerous navigational publications, including charts, publications on how to navigate and passage planning publications. In the US, publications are issued by the US government and US Coast Guard.
Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) is a voluntary association of oil companies having an interest in the shipment and terminalling of crude oil, oil products, petrochemicals and gas, and includes companies engaged in offshore marine operations supporting oil and gas exploration, development and production.

Crude tankers move large quantities of unrefined crude oil from its point of extraction to refineries. BIMCO states that its membership represents approximately 60 percent of the world's merchant shipping tonnage and that it has members in more than 130 countries, including managers, brokers and agents. The Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships, or Hong Kong Convention, is a multilateral convention adopted in 2009, which has not entered into force. The conference that created the convention was attended by 63 countries, and overseen by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
SIGTTO is the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators. It is a not-for-profit non-governmental organisation that represents owners of gas carriers and terminals, including LNG terminals. SIGTTO was formed as an international organisation for industry participants to share technical and operational experience, to address common industry problems and derive policies for improvements in maritime operations. The Society has more than 190 members including large companies such as BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron and Shell. The organisation has Observer Status at the International Maritime Organization as an NGO. Focusing on LNG and LPG, the society is involved in the creation of publications to enhance maritime knowledge and promote safety at sea. They are actively involved in research for the use of gas as a marine fuel and publish various relevant industry guidelines. The current CEO and general manager is Ian Revell, a chartered engineer, who was appointed in September 2022.
Bridge OperationsQuality Assurance is a methodology utilised in shipping and which originates from the similar FOQA/FDM concept in aviation. BOQA is a methodology with which ship owners/operators, ship Captains, and other associated shipping stakeholders can automatically and systematically monitor, track, trend and analyse operational quality of (seagoing) vessels. The main target with BOQA is to provide a non-punitive platform for proactive analysis of vessel data to enable the enhancement of maritime safety. The BOQA methodology can be used in both conventional crewed ships and in autonomous or uncrewed vessels provided that adequate data sources are available.
