This was the first time Iranian boxers were participating in an official Asian tournament, such as the Asian Games, with 9 boxers, the most boxers after the Japanese boxing team. In the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, the Iranian boxing team managed to bag a total of 6 medals, including three silver medals, three bronze medals, and also obtained three fifth places. [2] The consequence of this participation resulted in Iran's boxing team to rank second, considering medal counts, and fifth, in the overall boxing table, helping Iran Sports Convoy to rank fourth, overall in the Third Asian Games, which was applauded by the Iranian officials. [3]
The Iranian national boxing team, which consisted of boxers from Tehran Taj club and Tehran Jafari club, was coached by Petros Nazarbegian, [4] [5] and the team members were: Ezaria Ilkhanoff (Persian: ایزاریا ایلخانوف) in the Flyweight division (bronze medal), [6] Karapet Kochar (Persian: کاراپت کوچار) in the Bantamweight division (fifth place), Sadegh Aliakbarzadeh (Persian: صادق علی اکبرزاده) in the Featherweight division (fifth place), [7] Hassan Pakandam (Persian: حسن پاک اندام) in the Lightweight division (fifth place), [8] Vazik Kazarian (Persian: وازیک قازاریان) in the Light-Welterweight division (silver medal), [9] Soren Pirjanian (Persian: سورن پیرجانیان) in the Welterweight division (silver medal), [10] Ghasem Amiryavari (captain) (Persian: امیر یاوری) in the Light-middleweight division (silver medal), [11] Leon Khachatourian (Persian: لئون خاچاطوریان) in the Middleweight division (bronze medal), [12] Akbar Khojini (Persian: اکبرخوجینی) in the Light heavyweight division (bronze medal), (no participant in the Heavyweight division). The welterweight was the third heaviest boxing weight class held as part of the boxing programme at the 1904 Summer Olympics. The competition was held on Wednesday, September 21, 1904 and on Thursday, September 22, 1904. It was the first time the event, like all other boxing events, was held in Olympic competition. Welterweights had to be less than 65.8 kilograms. Four boxers competed.
Suban Pannon is a Thai amateur boxer who won a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games.
Alfredo Cornejo Cuevas was a Chilean boxer, who won the gold medal in the welterweight division at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago, United States. In the same year he also won the world amateur welterweight title in Mexico City. He later fought four professional fights from 1961 to 1962. As an amateur, he was three times South American Champion; as a light welterweight in Montevideo, Uruguay, 1956, and in Santiago, Chile, 1957, and as a welterweight, in Lima, Peru, 1958. He also competed in the men's welterweight event at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Tunisia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1960, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games except when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Onur Şipal is a Turkish amateur boxer who competed at the 2008 and 2016 Summer Olympics. He is a southpaw and competes in the welterweight division. His brother Önder Şipal is also an amateur boxer.

Thomas Patrick Donovan was a New Zealand amateur boxer and rugby union player. He represented his country in boxing at the 1956 and 1964 Olympic Games, and won bronze medals at the 1958 and 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He also played representative rugby for Hawke's Bay.
Vikas Krishan Yadav is an Indian boxer from Bhiwani district in Haryana, the hub of some of India's best boxers. He won a gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games in the Lightweight category and a gold medal in 75 kg weight category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He is one of the best boxers of India. He also boxed professionally.
Daniyar Maratovich Yeleussinov is a Kazakh professional boxer who was the IBO welterweight champion in 2021. As an amateur he competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, winning a gold medal in 2016. He also won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games; the 2013 World Championships; and silver at the 2015 World Championships.
Navab Nassirshalal is an Iranian retired weightlifter who won a gold medal in the men's 105 kg event at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He began weightlifting at the age of 15 and has also won a bronze medal in the 94 kg class snatch at the 2007 Asian Weightlifting Championships, silver in the 94 kg clean and jerk and bronze overall at the 2009 edition, and gold in the 105 kg category in 2012.
The men's welterweight boxing competition at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was held from 16 September to 30 September at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Hassan Pakandam was a member of Iran senior national Boxing team from 1955, continuously until 1965, and a member of Tehran Taj Boxing Club from 1950 to 1965, boxing in the 60, 63.5, and 67 kg divisions. He was a well-built, skilled, swift, and intelligent all-around boxer. His recognized punch was a powerful cross. He participated at the 1958 Asian Games, and also as team captain at the 1964 Summer Olympics, in the Lightweight division and was also selected for the Lightweight division of the Iranian national boxing team, to participate in the 1962 Asian Games.
Petros Nazarbegian was an Iranian amateur boxer of Armenian ethnicity who competed in the lightweight division at the 1952 Summer Olympics as a member of the Iran senior national Boxing team. He lost to Erkki Pakkanen, the eventual bronze medal winner, in the second round on points. Nazarbegian was also the head coach of Iranian national boxing team, from 1954 up to 1963, an international referee, and vice president of the International Boxing Association. In Tokyo 1958, Petros Nazarbegian acted as head coach for the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games who were participating officially for the first time in the Third Asian Games, with a team of nine boxers, managing to rank second, considering medal counts, and fifth in the overall boxing table.
Ghasem Amir-Yavarkandi also known as Ghasem Amiryavari, was a member of the Iranian senior national boxing team. Yavari joined the "Niroo va Rasti" Club in 1947 at the age of sixteen, where he started his boxing career and became a member of "Jafari" Club later on, where he stayed until 1962 which was the end of his national boxing championship career.
Sadegh Aliakbarzadeh Khoi, was an Iranian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1957, and was also a member of Tehran Jafari Club, boxing in the 54 and 57 kg divisions. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Featherweight division, and also at the 1960 Summer Olympics, and the 1964 Summer Olympics, in the Bantamweight division, and was also selected for the Bantamweight division of the Iranian national boxing team, to participate in the 1962 Asian Games. In Tokyo 1958, Aliakbarzadeh obtained the fifth place of the 57 kg boxing division, after losing on points to Isami Ikeyama, from Japan, the eventual gold medal winner of the division, in the quarterfinal.
Soren Pirjanian also spelled Souren Pirjanian was an Iranian Armenian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1955, and was also a member of Tehran Taj Club. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Welterweight division. In Tokyo 1958, Pirjanian reached the final of the Welterweight division after defeating both Norberto David from the Philippines, and Toshiro Onuki from Japan, on points, and eventually won the silver medal of the 67 kg boxing division, after losing on points to Kim Ki-soo from South Korea in the final. He retired from championship boxing and the Iranian national boxing team, after returning from the 1958 Asian Games.
Vazik Kazarian aka Vazik Ghazarian was an Iranian Armenian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1956, and was also a member of Tehran Taj Club. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Light-welterweight division, and also at the 1960 Summer Olympics, in the Light-welterweight division. In Tokyo 1958, Kazarian reached the final of the Light-welterweight division after defeating Sueb Chundakowsolaya from Thailand, on points in the semifinal, and eventually won the silver medal of the 63.5 kg boxing division, after losing on points to Shigemasa Kawakami from Japan in the final. He retired from championship boxing and the Iranian national boxing team, after returning from the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Nasser Aghaie was an Iranian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1963. He participated as a member of this team at the first Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in 1963, and at the 1964 Summer Olympics, in the Flyweight division, and at 1966 Asian Games, in the Featherweight division, and also at the third Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Colombo, Ceylon in 1967.
Akbar Khojini, was an Iranian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1956, and was also a member of Tehran Jafari Club, boxing in the 81 kg division. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Light Heavyweight division, and also at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand in 1963, in which he won the silver medal of the 81 kg boxing division, after losing to Ali Barkat from Pakistan, in the final. Khojini was also selected for the Light Heavyweight division of the Iranian national boxing team, to participate in the 1962 Asian Games. In Tokyo 1958, Khojini lost to Sultan Mahmoud from Pakistan, in the quarterfinal, and won the bronze medal of the 81 kg boxing division. Khojini retired from championship boxing and the Iranian national boxing team, after returning from the 1963 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in Bangkok.
