Iranian results in men's freestyle wrestling

Wrestlers from the Iran have taken part in most of the major men's freestyle wrestling competitions over the years, in particular the Olympic Games and World Wrestling Championships.

Contents

Iran first participated at the Olympic Games in 1948, and has sent wrestlers to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for 1980 and 1984 due to boycotts. Iran also did not send wrestlers to the World Championships in 1979, 1983, 1986, and 1987. [1]

Men's freestyle wrestling competition at the Olympics was first held in 1904. FILA began holding World Championships in men's freestyle in 1951.

Frank Chamizo Marquez is a Cuban-Italian freestyle wrestler who competes at 74 kilograms. Starting his career in Cuba, Chamizo became a World Cup champion, World Championship medalist, and Pan American champion at 55 kilograms in 2010 and 2011 before immigrating to Italy in 2011 Since then, Chamizo became the greatest Italian wrestler of all time, racking up two World Championships, an Olympic bronze medal in 2016, an Individual World Cup silver medal, a European Games silver medal, four European Championships, and others.

Men's freestyle wrestling competition began in the Olympics in 1904. FILA began holding World Championships in men's freestyle in 1951. During Olympic years, FILA suspends the World Championships.

Taha Akgül is an Olympic, World, and European champion Turkish freestyle wrestler competing in the 125 kg division. He is a 3 time world and 11 time European champion. He won the gold medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics and the bronze medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics as well as in the 2024 Summer Olympics at 125 kg. He is a graduate of the Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University Physical Education and Sports Academy and completed his master's degree at Sivas Cumhuriyet University.

Hassan Yazdani Charati is an Iranian freestyle wrestler. Yazdani is an Olympic and World Champion in freestyle wrestling in two weight categories. He became Olympic champion in the 74kg category at the 2016 Summer Olympics after defeating Russian wrestler Aniuar Geduev in the final. The following year he became World Champion at the 2017 World Wrestling Championships in the Men's freestyle 86 kg category. He won his second world title at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Kazakhstan and third at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Norway.

Deepak Punia is an Indian freestyle wrestler and Naib Subedar in the Indian Army. He won a silver medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in the freestyle 86 kg category, where Hassan Yazdani of Iran, a wrestler that Punia idolises, won the final by walkover. Punia's silver medal secured him a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics. He was born in Jhajjar district, Haryana. He faced Yazdani again in the 86 kg final of 2022 Asian Games, but lost 10-0 in a one-sided match.

Amir Hossein Zare is an Iranian freestyle wrestler who currently competes in the heavyweight division. Zare became World Champion in 2021, and 2023. He was the 2019 U23 World Champion at age 18. He claimed a Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medal in 2021. In the age-group, he was the 2018 Cadet World Champion and claimed silver medals from the 2019 Junior World Championships and the 2018 Youth Summer Olympics.

This was the nation's 19th appearance at the Summer Olympics.
