Irion County Independent School District is a public school district based in Mertzon, Texas (USA). Residents of Sherwood, Mertzon, Barnhart, and some residents of Tom Green County attend the school.

West Texas Boys Ranch (WTBR) is a Christian private residential community for boys located in Tankersley, unincorporated Tom Green County, Texas, near San Angelo. The 963-acre (390 ha) facility is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and it is open to any qualified boy, regardless of his or his family's ability to pay the tuition. The ranch uses donations to fund its services. The ranch can accommodate up to 40 boys, who come from across the United States. The ranch does not take custody of its boys, and it is not a boot camp, detention center, drug rehabilitation center, or a "last resort" for hardcore juvenile offenders.

Irion County High School is a public high school located in Mertzon, Texas (US) and classified as a 1A school by the UIL. It is part of the Irion County Independent School District located in east central Irion County. In 2015, the school was rated "Met Standard" by the Texas Education Agency.
