Iris Publishing Company

The Iris Publishing Company were a small publishing company located at 30 and 31 Furnival Street, London, in the late nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth century. They were associated with The Chichester Press [1] and specialised in publishing translations of foreign language works into English.

The founder of the firm was Andree de Keyser. [2] The manager was her husband, the composer Alfred Ignace de Keyser (born 1872), of 16 Carleton Road, Tufnell Park, London, who died while holidaying in Bournemouth in 1917 [3] [4] after which the Iris Publishing Company appears to have ceased in business. Alfred is buried at the Wimborne Road Cemetery in Bournemouth where a large monument exists to his memory. Andree de Keyser died in France at Montorel Ingrandes-sur-Loire in 1945. [5]

Samuel Knight (architect)

Samuel Knight (1834-1911) was a British architect practicing from Cornhill Chambers, 62 Cornhill, London EC and later 175 and 176 Temple Chambers, Tudor Street, London EC.

Albert Kingwell

Albert Edward Kingwell was an English architect, surveyor and land agent who was one of the first to use concrete in his practice. He oversaw the Jack Estate at Hadley Wood in Hertfordshire for more than 50 years.

Joseph Thornton (contractor)

Joseph Thornton was a railway contractor in England in the mid-nineteenth century. He was in business building railway lines for the many railway companies in Victorian Britain and was a director of a number of companies connected to his profession. He lived at Beaver Hall in Southgate near London with his large family and servants but left an estate of only £545.

Winifred "Betty" Barnes was an English actress and singer known for roles in Edwardian musical comedy and operetta, creating the title role in Betty, among others. After 15 years on the stage, she retired upon her marriage in 1924.

Otho Stuart

Otho Stuart was a British actor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who specialised in performing in the plays of Shakespeare. Stuart played the range of Shakespearean leading men, both with the Company of F. R. Benson and with his own Company during his management of the Adelphi Theatre in London. Of independent means, he used his own money to help finance Benson's productions and his own. The theatre critic J. C. Trewin described him as 'one of the handsomest Oberons of all time.'

Henry Lytton Jr. British actor and singer

Henry Lytton, Jr. was a British actor and singer who after a career in film and musical comedy ended as a pantomime dame and Ringmaster of the famous Blackpool Tower Circus in Blackpool.

Peter De Greef was a British actor who made a number of film appearances in the 1940s and 50s including Champagne Charlie (1944).

Reginald Crompton British actor and singer

Reginald Crompton was a British solicitor, stage actor and silent film screenwriter. A bass-baritone, he created several minor roles in the Savoy Operas with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.

Elizabeth Nickell-Lean

Elizabeth Gertrude Nickell-Lean was a mezzo-soprano who sang mostly minor roles with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company for six years during the 1930s and on occasion sang the main soubrette roles, including the title character in Iolanthe.
