Is It My Turn (originally released as Spellbinding) is a 2012 Canadian experimental digital 3D black and white dance film directed by Shelagh Carter. [1] The film features an original score by Keri Latimer, dance performances by CindyMarie Small, Natasha Torres-Garner, and Ali Robson, and is choreographed by the dancers taking an award-winning original poem by Deborah Schnitzer as inspiration. [2]
In its earliest release, the film bore the title of its source poem, Spellbinding, [3] which won a Margaret Laurence Award. [4] The film was re-released under its new title in 2013. [5] Some early National Screen Institute sources mistakenly refer to the film as Is It My Turn? [6] No question mark appears in the film's title onscreen.
At first seen through a dome or globe, three women perform a piece of interpretive dance to music.
Is It My Turn has been described as an "expression of the hope of the feminine, expressed through dance" [7] and an exploration of the nature of "creative female energy" through dance. [6] Shelagh Carter herself stated: "In capturing the moving images of three female dancers as an act of love, I return to that deep personal and professional space whose channels I have learned to open and touch as an artist. [4]
Is It My Turn is based on the poem Spellbinding by Deborah Schnitzer, who in turn was inspired by Gertrude Stein. [8] Schnitzer has collaborated with Shelagh Carter several times on her films, [9] starting with Rifting/Blue (2005). [10]
Carter's film received support from the Winnipeg Film Group, Manitoba Film and Music, and a film/video tax credit from the Government of Canada.
The film was shot in the University of Winnipeg's Asper Centre for Theatre and Film, "with film students handling everything from shooting, camera angles, lighting, sound and post-production." [8]
To make the film, the three dancers were given a poem by Deborah Schnitzer, Spellbinding, and asked to interpret assigned sections through dance, their movements filmed by cinematographer Danielle Sturk, who had also made a career as both a dance artist and choreographer. [4] Carter found that the use of the 3D camera offered an opportunity to explore the visual depth of dance choreography as it could take far greater liberties with space and time, enhancing further the film's ability to be interrupted at any moment. [4]
After the shoot, the film was edited and scored, respectively, by Juno Award-winning musicians Chad Tremblay and Keri Latimer. [4]
The film was initially released under the title Spellbinding, beginning its festival run in Los Angeles, [3] at the Lady Filmmakers Film Festival in September 2012. [5] Is It My Turn was re-released under its new title in 2013, premiering in Canada at the Gimli Film Festival on 26 July, [6] screening in competition or as an Official Selection and award-winner in numerous film festivals in North America, Asia and Europe through to 2016, [8] [5] including the Canada Dance Festival as part of a programme with ten other dance films on 10 June 2016. [11]
A special screening took place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, at the request of the Canadian High Commission in January 2015, with Carter in attendance. [8] Carter and her husband Brad Loewen had moved to Dhaka in December 2013 when, following the Rana Plaza Collapse of 24 April 2013, he was given the responsibility of implementing the Accord signed by Western clothing manufacturers upgrading the safety features of 1600 Bangladeshi garment factories. [12] [13] While living there, Carter produced a short documentary, Rana Plaza: Let Not the Hope Die (2014), commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragedy, [14] "to support his work". [15]

The Rana Plaza collapse occurred on 24 April 2013, when the eight-storey "Rana Plaza" commercial building collapsed due to a structural failure. The rescue team's search ended on 13 May 2013, with a confirmed death toll of 1,134. Approximately 2,500 injured people were rescued from the building. It is considered as one of the deadliest structural failures in modern human history, as well as the deadliest garment-factory disaster in history, and the deadliest industrial accident in the history of Bangladesh. Carter's third feature is an independent film loosely based on characters from Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, Dale's character being based on Yelena, and Keleghan's on Dr. Astrov. The film features an original score by Shawn Pierce.
Before Anything You Say is a 2017 Canadian experimental domestic drama film directed and produced by Shelagh Carter and written by Deborah Schnitzer about a couple struggling to maintain their love and marriage even as a life-altering decision threatens to tear them apart. Carter's second independent feature film is partly autobiographical, its "impulse" based on an event in Carter's own life and another experience in Schnitzer's. The film toured mainly in Europe, at Film Festival International-organized events in 2017 and 2018, winning a handful of awards ahead of its Canadian premiere at the Gimli Film Festival in 2018, where Shelagh Carter was presented with an award by the Directors Guild of Canada.
Shelagh Jane Carter is a Canadian director, producer, screenwriter, actress and retired theatre and film professor at the University of Winnipeg, known initially for her short films Night Travellers, Canoe, and Rifting/Blue, and her feature films Passionflower, Before Anything You Say and Into Invisible Light. A Lifetime Member of the Actors Studio and a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre's Directors Lab in Toronto, she is also a recipient of the award, Women in the Director's Chair Career Advancement Module 2010, in collaboration with Women in Film Festival Vancouver, among many other honours. She is a member of the Winnipeg Film Group and chair of their Board.

Carter's fourth film stars Jonathan Ralston and Jennifer Dale, and was screened at many international film festivals, winning three awards.
