Early life and education

Ishraque Hossain was born on 5 April 1987, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His father, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, was a freedom fighter, a former minister, and the last mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation. He completed his early education at Scholastica School and later pursued Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire in England, where he earned his undergraduate and master's degrees. [4]

Political career

On 1 Februar 2020, Hossain contested the mayoral election of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) as a BNP candidate. [5] In the preliminary results, he received 236,000 votes, while the Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh won with 424,000 votes. [6] The BNP rejected the election results, alleging vote rigging and irregularities. On March 3, 2020, Hossain filed a lawsuit in the First Joint District Judge Court of Dhaka, seeking the annulment of the election results and declaring himself the rightful winner. The case named the then Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, Returning Officer Md. Abdul Baten, and eight others, including Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, as defendants. [7]

Controversies

The movement by his supporters demanding that he take the oath to become mayor was criticized [8] [9] and caused controversy. [10] [11] Adviser Asif Mahmud said that since the term had expired, the government would not administer the oath again. [12] [13] [14] [15]

Personal life

Hossain is engaged to Barrister Nusrat Khan, the eldest daughter of politician Noor Muhammad Khan. [16] [17]
