Ismat Kadir Gama is a businessman and former general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League from 1972 to 1973. He is the vice-chairperson of Freedom Fighters Central Command Council. [1] He is member of Gopalganj District Samiti. [2]

Early life

Gama was born in Gopalganj District. [5]

Career

Gama was the assistant secretary of the East Pakistan Chhatra League. [5] After the start of Bangladesh Liberation War, he went to train in Dehradun, India. [5] He fought in the Mujib Bahini. [5] He fought in Bhatiapara, Gopalganj District. [5]

Gama was made the general secretary of general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League after Shajahan Siraj was expelled in 1972. [6]

After the Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Gama and other leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League tried to prevent coup leader Khandaker Mostaque Ahmed from holding a meeting with Awami League member of parliament. [7]

On 3 January 2000, Gama met with leaders of Jamiatul Modaresin along with ASHK Sadek, Minister of Education, and talked about removing those who opposed the independence of Bangladesh from Madrassah education system. [8]

In November 2011, Gama requested Minister of Home Affairs Sahara Khatun to detain Ghulam Azam on war crimes charges for his role during the Bangladesh Liberation War. [9]

Gama was given a crest on the 69th anniversary of Chhatra League in 2017 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [10]

Gama is the founding chairman of Channel S, launched on 12 June 2024, with Sujit Chakrabarty as managing director. It is the first television channel in Bangladesh utilizing artificial intelligence. [11] [12]

Personal life

Gama was married to Mahfuza Chowdhury Parvin, the principal of Eden Mohila College from 2009 to 2012. [13] [14] She was killed by her domestic workers on 10 February 2010 at her home on Elephant Road. [13] [15] He filed a murder case with the New Market police station. [16] Her maids, Rita Akter and Ruma, were charged with her murder and sentenced to death by Judge Abu Zafar Md. Kamaruzzaman of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka. [17]

Mamunul Haque is a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar and the Joint Secretary-General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, emerged as an Islamist leader in the late 2010s, particularly following the deadliest events of the Siege of Dhaka. With an ancestral heritage of religious scholarship and political leadership from his father, Azizul Haque, he succeeded his father both as a Sheikh al-Hadith at Jamia Rahmania and as the Secretary-General of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis. He is best known for his oratory skills and his advocacy for the establishment of an Islamic state and the integration of Islamic principles into government policies. In 2020 and 2021, he led opposition to the construction of a sculpture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and organized anti-Modi protests, which made him the undisputed Hefazat leader overnight. He faced legal challenges, including 41 cases, one of which was a treason charge, and has been imprisoned three times under the Sheikh Hasina regime. Following the fall of this regime, he participated in discussions with the President and the Chief of Army Staff, which eventually led to the formation of the Yunus ministry, which included a member from Hefazat, A F M Khalid Hossain. In addition to his political and religious activities, he has served as an adjunct professor at Asian University of Bangladesh and is the editor of Rahmani Paigam, a monthly magazine published in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League, formerly known as East Pakistan Student League, often simply called the Chhatra League, is a students' political organisation in Bangladesh. But later, it has been repeatedly accused of using torture, extortion, violence, forced prostitution, and killings to instill fear. At least 33 people were killed and 1,500 got seriously injured from attacks by BSL between 2009 and 2014. Number of fatalities rose to 129 between 2014 and 2018 while 31 people were killed in 2018 alone.

2000 Chittagong massacre refers to the murder of eight people allegedly by the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir who had fired on a microbus carrying Bangladesh Chhatra League activists killing six in the microbus and one passerby.
