Italy participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation in the contest. Chanel Dilecta represented Italy with the song "Bla Bla Bla". [1]

Background

Prior to the 2022 contest, Italy had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest seven times since its debut in 2014, having won the contest on their first appearance with the song " Tu primo grande amore ", performed by Vincenzo Cantiello. On the country's most recent appearance, in 2021, the Italian broadcaster internally selected Elisabetta Lizza to represent Italy at the contest with the song "Specchio (Mirror on the Wall)". She achieved tenth place with 107 points.

Italy withdrew from the 2020 contest due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite initially announcing that they would not return in 2021, [2] they ultimately announced their participation in the 2021 contest in France. [3]

Before Junior Eurovision

On 3 November 2022, RAI announced that 13-year-old Chanel Dilecta will represent Italy with the song "Bla Bla Bla". The song and music video were released a week later. [4]

At Junior Eurovision

After the opening ceremony, which took place on 5 December 2022, it was announced that Italy would perform fifth on 11 December 2022, following Malta and preceding France. [5]

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition was used, where the results were determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Every country had a national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten. [6]

The online voting consisted of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 9 December 2022 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances was shown on the contest's website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers could vote. After this, voters also had the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting ended on 11 December at 15:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting took place during the live show and began right after the last performance and was open for 15 minutes. International viewers were able vote for three songs. [7] They were also able to vote for their own country's song. These votes were then turned into points which were determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 10% of the votes, it received 10% of the available points.

Melissa and Marco were internally selected to represent Italy with the song "What Is Love", which finished seventh with 151 points at the event, receiving the top 12 points from the Macedonian jury and a cumulative 57 points through online voting.

Malta participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020, to be held in Warsaw, Poland. Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) was responsible for the country's participation in the contest, and organised a national final to select the Maltese entry. Malta was represented in the contest by the song "Chasing Sunsets", written by Peter Borg, Aleandro Spiteri Monseigneur, Joe Roscoe and Emil Calleja Bayliss, and performed by Chanel Monseigneur. She achieved 8th place with 100 points.

Armenia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France, having internally selected Maléna as their representative with the song "Qami Qami". She was due to compete in the 2020 contest with the song "Why" before the country withdrew due to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Armenia won with 224 points; 6 points more than the runner-up Poland.

Italy took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France, returning to the competition after a one year absence from the 2020 contest. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation in the contest. Elisabetta Lizza represented Italy with the song "Specchio ".

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was the 20th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Public Television Company of Armenia (AMPTV). The contest took place on 11 December 2022 at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan, Armenia, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Qami Qami" by Maléna. This was the second time that Armenia hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in 2011.

North Macedonia competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Armenia, which was held on 11 December 2022 in Yerevan. Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT) is responsible for the country's participation in the contest, and selected Lara, Jovan and Irina as the Macedonian entrants.

Italy competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Nice, France, with Melissa and Ranya performing "Un mondo giusto". Italian broadcaster RAI, responsible for the country's participation, selected its artists and song via an internal selection.

Armenia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Nice, France, having internally selected its representatives, Yan Girls with the song "Do It My Way", written by Tokionine, Vahram Petrosyan and Maléna, the latter of whom won the 2021 contest.

Italy participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with "Pigiama party" performed by Simone Grande. The Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI) internally selected the country's entry for the contest.
