Italy participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation in the contest. Chanel Dilecta represented Italy with the song "Bla Bla Bla". [1]

Background

Prior to the 2022 contest, Italy had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest seven times since its debut in 2014, having won the contest on their first appearance with the song " Tu primo grande amore ", performed by Vincenzo Cantiello. On the country's most recent appearance, in 2021, the Italian broadcaster internally selected Elisabetta Lizza to represent Italy at the contest with the song "Specchio (Mirror on the Wall)". She achieved tenth place with 107 points.

Italy withdrew from the 2020 contest due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite initially announcing that they would not return in 2021, [2] they ultimately announced their participation in the 2021 contest in France. [3]

Before Junior Eurovision

On 3 November 2022, RAI announced that 13-year-old Chanel Dilecta will represent Italy with the song "Bla Bla Bla". The song and music video were released a week later. [4]

At Junior Eurovision

After the opening ceremony, which took place on 5 December 2022, it was announced that Italy would perform fifth on 11 December 2022, following Malta and preceding France. [5]

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition was used, where the results were determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Every country had a national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten. [6]

The online voting consisted of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 9 December 2022 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances was shown on the contest's website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers could vote. After this, voters also had the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting ended on Sunday 11 December at 15:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting took place during the live show and began right after the last performance and was open for 15 minutes. International viewers were able vote for three songs. [7] They were also able to vote for their own country's song. These votes were then turned into points which were determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 10% of the votes, it received 10% of the available points.

Italy debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest when the twelfth edition of competition was held in Malta in 2014. Italy participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 which took place on 26 November 2016 in Tbilisi, Georgia. The Italian broadcaster Rai Gulp, which is a channel owned by Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI), was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Maria Iside Fiore was internally selected to represent Italy with the song "Scelgo ".

Serbia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 which took place on 26 November 2017, in Tbilisi, Georgia. Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Irina Brodić and Jana Paunović were selected from national selection to represent Serbia with the song "Ceo svet je naš".

The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 which was held on 29 November 2020 in Warsaw, Poland. The girl group Unity was selected by AVROTROS to represent the country through the televised national selection Junior Songfestival 2020. They achieved 4th place with 132 points.

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 was the 19th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by France Télévisions and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The contest was held on 19 December 2021 at La Seine Musicale in Paris, France, following the country's victory at the 2020 contest with the song "J'imagine", performed by Valentina. This was the first time the contest was held in France, as well as the first Eurovision event to be held in the country since Eurovision Young Dancers 1999 in Lyon and the first to be held in Paris since Eurovision Young Dancers 1989.

Malta participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020, to be held in Warsaw, Poland. Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) was responsible for the country's participation in the contest, and organised a national final to select the Maltese entry. Malta was represented in the contest by the song "Chasing Sunsets", written by Peter Borg, Aleandro Spiteri Monseigneur, Joe Roscoe and Emil Calleja Bayliss, and performed by Chanel Monseigneur. She achieved 8th place with 100 points.

Armenia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France, having internally selected Maléna as their representative with the song "Qami Qami". She was due to compete in the 2020 contest with the song "Why" before the country withdrew due to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. Armenia won with 224 points; 6 points more than the runner-up Poland.

Italy took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France, returning to the competition after a one year absence from the 2020 contest. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation in the contest. Elisabetta Lizza represented Italy with the song "Specchio ".

Being from County Down, Lennon was the first singer from Northern Ireland to compete at Junior Eurovision.

Armenia participated in and hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, having internally selected its representative, Nare with the song "Dance!", written by Grigor Kyokchyan and Nick Egibyan.

Ukraine competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Armenia, which was held on 11 December 2022 in Yerevan. The country was represented by Zlata Dziunka with the song "Nezlamna (Unbreakable)", who won the national selection organised by the Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne.

Portugal competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Armenia, which was held on 11 December 2022 in Yerevan. Portuguese broadcaster RTP is responsible for the participation, and selected Nicolas Alves to represent the country, after being the runner-up on the third season of The Voice Kids, due to the actual winner Maria Gil having been born in November 2007.

France participated in and won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia. French broadcaster France Télévisions is responsible for the country's participation in the contest.

Serbia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia.

Italy will compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Nice, France. Italian broadcaster RAI is responsible for the country's participation, and will select an artist via the internal selection.
