In Danish culture, J-dag (short for "julebryg dag", meaning Christmas beer day) is the name given to the day on which Tuborg Brewery releases its christmas beer, Tuborg Julebryg. The concept was launched in 1990, though it had reportedly been celebrated in the mid-1980s. [1] [2] In 2008, the noun j-dag was included in Retskrivningsordbogen, the Danish spelling dictionary. [3]
Tuborg Julebryg has been Denmark's best-selling Christmas beer since its launch in 1981, and it is the fourth best-selling beer in Denmark. [4] The beer itself is a slightly stronger beer than a regular Tuborg beer, containing a taste of liquorice. [5]
In 1990, Tuborg began marketing the day on which they launched Julebryg as "J-dag". The idea was taken from Tuborg's existing P-dag campaign, involving the launch of their Easter beer. [6] J-dag reportedly came about around the mid-1980s, when, among other things, students marked the launch of the Christmas beer, but it was not until 1990 that Tuborg first launched J-dag as a celebration. J-Day was also partially inspired by a time in the 1980s when on the second Wednesday in November at 23:59, large numbers of people would gather to receive that year's version of the French red wine Beaujolais nouveau. From 1990 to 1998, the event was held on the second Wednesday of November and Tuborg Julebryg would only arrive a minute before midnight. In 1999, Tuborg's J-dag was moved to the first Friday in November, due to a large number of students and workers either turning up late for school or not turning up at all after partying the night before, with teachers and employers issuing complaints to Carlsberg. From then on, the Julebryg has arrived at 8:59pm. [7]
In 2009, Tuborg's J-day was moved to the last Friday in October, but the following year the day was moved back to the first Friday in November, and it has remained the same ever since. [1] In 2020, for the first time ever, J-dag was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [8]
During the event, Tuborg's blue elves distribute thousands of free Julebryg beers and blue Santa hats. [9] [10] The theme of "snow" is common on J-dag; when the beer is about to be launched, it is said that "the snow is falling", and the event is often referred to as a "snowstorm". [11] While launched by Tuborg, the name J-dag has become synonymous with the launch of several other Christmas beers. [12] The day is notably celebrated on the famed party street Jomfru Ane Gade in Aalborg. [9] In 1994, Tuborg distributed ice cream rather than beer to partygoers in Odense. [13] The event has frequently seen an increase in policing and spot checks by Danish police. [11] [14]

Tuborg is a Danish brewing company founded in 1873 on a harbour in Hellerup, to the north of Copenhagen, Denmark. Since 1970 it has been part of the Carlsberg Group. The brewery's flagship, the Tuborg pilsner, was brewed for the first time in 1880.

De Gyldne Laurbær is a Danish literature award, which was established in 1949. The award is handed by The Committee De Gyldne Laurbær, formerly Boghandlerklubben. The prize is given annually in February or March. Originally the award was a laurel wreath, a golden pin with an inscription, some money and a book gift worth 2500 DKK. Today the award is a laurel wreathe, a diploma and a book gift worth 2500 DKK. The award is handed at a ceremony arranged by the publishing house which has published the winning book and by the Committee De Gyldne Laurbær. Early in January every year the committee sends out ballot to all the Danish bookshops, which then give their vote for a Danish book which was published the year before. An author can only win The Golden Laurel once-in-a-lifetime, so the bookshops can not vote for an author who has already won the prize once before. The winner is usually one of the bestsellers among the Danish books. On the day when it is decided who wins the Golden Laurel, the president of the Committee of The Golden Laurel informs the winner about the award, while journalists follow the event.

The Alternative is a green and pro-European political party in Denmark. The party was publicly launched on 27 November 2013 by former Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk and Josephine Fock; Elbæk had been a parliamentarian for the Social Liberal Party. Elbæk was the leader of the party until February 2020, where he stepped down and was succeeded by Fock. Currently the party is led by Franciska Rosenkilde. It collaborates with DiEM25 at the European level. The Alternative regards itself as a political movement and a cultural voice, as well as a political party.
Nye Borgerlige is a national-conservative and right-wing populist political party in Denmark. Formed by Pernille Vermund and Peter Seier Christensen in 2015, it first entered the Folketing in 2019 with four seats and again in 2022 with six. After three defections in the first months after the election, by March 2023 the party's number of seats in the Folketing was reduced to three.
Emilie Anine Skovgaard Meng was a girl from Korsør, Denmark, who went missing in the early hours of 10 July 2016 from Korsør railway station after a night out with friends. Following a highly publicised search involving police and civilians, her body was discovered on 24 December 2016 in Regnemarks Bakke, Borup, Køge Municipality. A post-mortem examination determined that she had been strangled.
General elections were held in the Kingdom of Denmark on 1 November 2022, except in the Faroe Islands, where they were held on 31 October as 1 November was a national day of mourning for victims at sea. Of the 179 members of the Folketing, 175 were elected in Denmark proper, two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberals due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission, which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark, 48% in Greenland, and 71% in the Faroes, with a combined turnout of 84% for the realm as a whole.
Ann Pernille Vermund Bretton-Meyer is a Danish architect (MAA) and politician, being a member of the Folketing since 2019. She is known for co-founding and being the leader of the national-conservative political party Nye Borgerlige from its founding in 2015 until February 2023 and again from October 2023 to January 2024. On 10 January 2024, she surprisingly announced that she had left Nye Borgerlige, recommending its dissolution. A week later, she joined the parliamentary group of the Liberal Alliance.

The Moderates is a liberal political party in Denmark founded by former Prime Minister and current Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen. He announced the name in a foundational speech on 5 June 2021. At the same time, he said that his main scenario was that the party would be formed after the 2021 Danish local elections. The name was, according to Rasmussen, inspired by the fictitious Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg's party Moderaterne in the hit political TV drama Borgen as well as the Swedish Moderate Party, the then–second largest party in the Swedish Riksdag. The Moderates' political position is referred to as centre to centre-right.
