Jalees Ahmed Khan Tareen, also known as J.A.K. Tareen, was born in Mysore, Karnataka, India in 1947. He was the vice-chancellor of B. S. Abdur Rahman University, in Chennai, India from 2013 to 31 March 2015. [1] He was the recipient of the Padma Shri award 2009 for the Literature & Education given by the Government of India. [2] He is one of the current advisory board member of South Asia Foundation (SAF) from India. [3]

Education

Tareen has received his master of science (Geology, 1967), and PhD (Experimental Mineralogy, 1977) from Mysore University, India and second PhD from Bordeaux University, France (Solid State Chemistry, 1987). He was also a visiting scientist at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, Bordeaux University, France, University of Edinburgh, Scotland and Mekele University-Ethiopia.

Professional career

Tareen has served the university of Mysore for 33 years (1967–2000) at department of geology as a lecturer, professor, professor and head, and finally as a director of mineralogical institute. He has published notable research papers [4] and two fundamental crystallography books, namely "A Basic Course in Crystallography" and "Fundamentals of Crystal Chemistry". [5] [6]

In 2001 he has become the vice-chancellor of Kashmir University (2001–2004). Kashmir, India.

Later, he served as CEO of South Asia Foundation and active member of university grants commission (UGC), India. He was involved in preparing the XII plan document on higher education on issues of Quality and increasing Access. [7] [8] [9]

He then served as the vice-chancellor of Pondicherry University (2007-2013), [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

He served as the vice-chancellor of B. S. Abdur Rahman University, in Chennai, India, from 2013 to 2015. [1]

Awards and honors

Tareen is a recipient of several state as well as national awards. [2] Taking into account of his contribution as a scientist and educationalist, Indian government has awarded the Padma Shri to him in 2009. [17] He has also received the National Mineral award, the golden Jubilee Science & Technology award of Mysore University, and Mineralogical Society Gold Medal award.

Other activities

Tareen has published his memoirs of Kashmir as a book, Fire under the Snowflakes - The return of Kashmir University. [18] [19] His ideas on education is revealed by his talks and interviews which includes ‘higher education’, ‘education for all’, ‘making Indian universities globally competitive’, etc. [20] [21] [22] [23]

He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009. Until 19 June 2018, he served as Advisor to the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, with the status of a Cabinet Minister. His literary career spans over decades in which he wrote over thirty-four biographies in Kannada language and other works including children's literature. Koneru Ramakrishna Rao was an Indian philosopher who served as Chancellor of GITAM, and as Chairman of GITAM school of Gandhian Studies, psychologist, parapsychologist, educationist, teacher, researcher and administrator. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2011.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Talat Ahmad</span> Indian Earth scientist and professor

Talat Ahmad is an Indian Earth Scientist, former Professor at the Department of Geology, University of Delhi and served as Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Senior Scientist. He served as Chairman of Governing body which oversees Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun from 1 November 2021 onwards and served the office till 31 October 2027. Previously, he commenced his second stint as Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir on 6 August 2018 and served the office till 20 May 2022. Before that, he served as Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, he resigned from the post a few months short of his full term. He was shortlisted by a committee constituted by the governor to shortlist a panel for the post. He had earlier taken over as Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir from Professor Riyaz Punjabi on 1 June 2011 and served there until the year 2014. Prior to this, he was teaching Geology at the University of Delhi.

Madappa Mahadevappa, popularly known as Rice Mahadevappa was an Indian agricultural scientist and plant breeder, renowned for developing high yielding hybrid varieties of rice. He served for more than 55 years and had a glowing career. He served as the Vice-chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad for two terms and his selfless hard work along with broad vision lead to the award of ICAR's SARDAR PATEL OUTSTANDING INSTITUTION award in the year 2000 to UAS, Dharwad. He served as chairman of Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board under Indian Council of Agricultural Research of which he was a member of governing council. As chairman of ASRB, he introduced radical changes to create transparency in recruitment and expedited the process of promotions. This enhanced the talent pool at ICAR system to further contribute to the cause of the agriculture and farming community. He was the recipient of Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, Padma Shri and various other accolades.

Munirathna Anandakrishnan was an Indian civil engineer, educationist, a chairman of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and a vice-chancellor of Anna University. He was also an Advisor to the Government of Tamil Nadu on Information Technology and e-Governance. A winner of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Brazil), he was honored by the Government of India, in 2002, with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
