Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer,retired United States Air Force (USAF) officer and fighter pilot,and former NASA astronaut,in which capacity he became the first African American to go to space. While assigned to NASA,he remained a USAF officer rising to the rank of colonel. He participated in four Space Shuttle flights between 1983 and 1992. In 1983,as a member of the crew of the Orbiter Challenger on the mission STS-8,he became the first African American in space as well as the second black person in space,after Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.
Gerald Lee Baliles was a Virginia lawyer and Democratic politician whose career spanned great social and technological changes in his native state. The 65th Governor of Virginia,the native of Patrick County previously served as the Commonwealth's attorney general (1982–85),and represented Richmond and Henrico County in the Virginia House of Delegates (1972-1982). After another stint in private legal practice,with Hunton &Williams (1991-2005),Baliles directed the nonpartisan Miller Center of Public Affairs associated with his alma mater,the University of Virginia (2006-2014).

Kurt Heinrich Debus was a German-American rocket engineer and NASA director. Born in Germany,he was a member of the Schutzstaffel (SS) during World War II,where he served as a V-weapons flight test director. Following the war,he was brought to the United States via Operation Paperclip,and directed the design,development,construction and operation of NASA's Saturn launch facilities. He became the first director of NASA's Launch Operations Center,and,under him,NASA conducted 150 launches of military missiles and space vehicles,including 13 launches of the Saturn V rocket as part of the Apollo Moon landing program.

Frederick Thomas Gray was a Virginia attorney and Democratic Party politician. Governor J. Lindsay Almond appointed Gray to serve as Attorney General of Virginia after the resignation of Attorney General Albertis Harrison to run for Governor of Virginia during the Massive Resistance crisis in Virginia. Gray returned to private practice at Williams Mullen after Robert Young Button took office. Gray later served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate as he continued his law practice.
Francis B. Gouldman was an American politician,lawyer and judge from the U.S. state of Virginia. A member of the Democratic Party,and the Byrd Organization,he served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1952 to 1964,representing his native Fredericksburg,Virginia,and Spotsylvania County. A year after he was defeated in the 1963 Democratic primary to retain his part-time office as delegate,Gouldman was elected a judge of the first Juvenile and Domestic Relations court in Virginia,and served until 1977.
