Chevalier John Ladislaus Pitchaiya Roche Victoria K. S. G (b. 26 September 1894 - d. 15 October 1962) [1] was an Indian politician from Tuticorin belonging to the Indian National Congress. He hailed from a wealthy and eminent Paravar family and was also a businessman with ownership in several commercial ventures. From 1926-46, he served as the chairman of the Tuticorin Municipality. Additionally, he was a member of the Madras Presidency Legislative Assembly during 1937-42 and a nominated member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1946. Roche served as the minister for Food and Fisheries in the P. S. Kumaraswami Raja cabinet during 2 June 1949 – 8 February 1952. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Indian National Congress candidate from Tuticorin constituency in the 1952 election. [2] Furthermore, he held the position of governor of Rotary district 320 (covering Sri Lanka and South India). [3] [4]

Victoria became a Chevalier of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.[ citation needed ] The Roche park in Tuticorin is named after him. [5]

During 1964-70 he was the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.

Udupi Krishna Rau was a medical practitioner and politician of the Indian National Congress. He served as mayor of Madras city and as State minister.

The first legislative assembly Election to the Madras state based on universal adult suffrage was held in 27 March 1952. This was the first election held in Madras state after the Indian Independence. This election was officially known as the 1951 Madras State Election, even though through delays, actual voting didn't take place until early 1952.

Balasubramanian Parameswaran was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from Maduranthakam constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate in 1946, 1952, and 1962 elections. He was the grandson of Rettamalai Srinivasan, a pioneer in the Scheduled Caste movement. He was educated at the St. Gabriels High School and Presidency College, Madras. He served as private secretary to another Scheduled Caste leader M. C. Rajah. During 7 April 1949 – 9 April 1952, he was the minister for Firka development, Khadi, Cottage industries, Fisheries, Cinchona and Harijan uplift in the P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja cabinet. During 1952–54, he was the mayor of Madras. From 13 April 1954 until 31 March 1957, he was the minister for Transport, Harijan Uplift, Hindu Religious Endowments, Registration and Prohibition in K. Kamaraj's first cabinet. During 1958–62, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha – the upper house of the Indian parliament.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">1946 Madras Presidency Legislative Assembly election</span>

The second legislative assembly election for the Madras Presidency after the establishment of a bicameral legislature by the Government of India Act of 1935 was held in 1946. The election was held after 6 years of Governor's rule starting from 1939, when the Indian National Congress government of C. Rajagopalachari resigned protesting Indian involvement in World War II. This was the last election held in the presidency - after Indian independence in 1947, the presidency became the Madras state. The election was held simultaneously with that of the Legislative Council. The Congress swept the polls by winning 163 out of 215 seats. The years after this election saw factionalism in Madras Congress party with divisions across regional and communal lines. Competition among T. Prakasam, C. Rajagopalachari and K. Kamaraj resulted in the election of Prakasam as the Prime Minister initially. But he was later defeated by Omandur Ramaswamy Reddiar with Kamaraj's support. In turn, Reddiar himself was ousted to make way for P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja with the support of Kamaraj.

M. Muhammad Ismail was an Indian politician and social worker from southern Indian state Tamil Nadu. he was a founder of the Indian Union Muslim League party after the partition of British India. He was popularly known in Tamil Nadu and Kerala as the "Quaid-e-Millat" .. Ismail was a member of Madras Legislative Assembly and Leader of the Opposition (1946—52). He was also a member (1948—50) of the Constituent Assembly, the drafting body of the constitution of India. He was also a member of Rajya Sabha (1952—58) and Lok Sabha.

S. B. Adityan, known as Si. Pa. Aditanar, was an Indian politician from Tamil Nadu belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. A native of Kayamozhi, in Tirunelveli district. He studied in England and was a lawyer by profession. He married Govindammal in 1933, who was the daughter of a very wealthy businessmen in Singapore, and with that wealth he managed to establish the Daily Thanthi paper, Sun Paper Mills after returning to India. He began his life as a newspaper artist. He was imprisoned for four months in 1941 during Independence movement. He also participated actively in temple entry movement. He served as a director of Sun Paper Mill Ltd in 77-78 He was lawyer by profession and served as an Advocate in Supreme Court of India. He served as the member of Central Legislative assembly between 1945 and 1947. He also served as a member of Tamil Nadu legislative assembly between 1952 and 1957. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Indian National Congress candidate from Tiruchendur constituency in 1952 election. He was one of the two elected members from that constituency, the other being V. Arumugam from Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party. He also served as a member of Tamil Nadu legislative council between 1958–1964 and 1967–1971.

K. S. G. Haja Shareef was an Indian industrialist and politician from Tamil Nadu. Shareef served in the Madras Legislative Assembly and its successor body, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, from 1957 to 1967 and from 1980 to 1984. A member of the Indian National Congress, Shareef was the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 1983 until 1984.
