Jahkoy Palmer (born March 23, 1994) (known as Jahkoy or JAHKOY) [1] [2] [3] is a Canadian R&B singer and rapper. [4] [5] [6] He has released several projects, including the mixtape Forward Thinking, and the singles "Still in Love", "Hold Your Hand", and "Odd Future". [2] [7] His most recent single, "Odd Future," premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show in January 2016 and was played by Drake on OVO Sound Radio. [8] [9]

Early life

Palmer was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to a Jamaican mother and an Ethiopian father. [10] [11] Growing up, he lived in both the Lawrence Heights and Jane and Finch neighborhoods in Toronto. To keep him out of trouble, his parents transferred him to Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic school. [1] As young as age 11, he began writing poetry and turning those poems into raps. [2] [12] He began recording and rapping under the name Raheem by age 14. [4] Palmer counts Pharrell and Andre 3000 among his early influences. [10] [13]

Career

Under the alias Raheem, Palmer performed at numerous events throughout Toronto, including the Manifesto Arts Festival and the 106 and York Urban Arts Festival, before he turned 16. [1] By age 19, he decided to return to his birth name, Jahkoy, for his music career. He released his first mixtape under the name JAHKOY in December 2013. The album, Forward Thinking, introduced what Jahkoy refers to as a "bipolar" sound, [2] and also marked a shift from predominantly rapping to predominantly singing. [4]

JAHKOY has collaborated with Willow and Jaden Smith. In 2015, he released singles including "Still in Love," "Hold Your Hand," and "All The Things You Do." [8] [10] "Still in Love" and "Hold Your Hand" were often in regular rotation on Zane Lowe, Drake, Elton John, and Pharrell's Beats 1 radio stations. [14]

In early 2016, Jahkoy was signed to Def Jam Recordings. [5] [6] He released his first single under the Def Jam banner in January 2016. The song, "Odd Future," was premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio station and was played by Drake and OVO Sound Radio. [8]

Throughout 2017, Jahkoy and Ella Mai opened for Kehlani on her SweetSexySavage World Tour.

Personal life

Palmer confirmed his relationship with Australian fitness model and influencer Tammy Hembrow on Instagram in June 2019. Hembrow and Palmer dated for a few months in 2019 and broke up.

Makonnen Kamali Sheran, better known by his stage name iLoveMakonnen, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He first became known for his 2014 song "Tuesday", which was discovered and remixed by Canadian rapper Drake. Originally released in August of that year, he signed with Drake's record label OVO Sound, an imprint of Warner Records that same month; the song was given a commercial re-release by the label the following September and subsequently peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and received a nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Amir Obeid, known professionally as Amir Obè, is an American rapper, singer-songwriter, and record producer of Sudanese-Polish descent from Detroit, Michigan. He started his music career in 2009 as Phreshy Duzit and signed to Atlantic Records. He later left the label to reinvent his style and changed his name to Amir Obè and found his own collective Neighborhood PHCK$. Obè rose to fame by releasing the mixtape, Detrooklyn in 2014. In 2015, he released the EP, Happening in the Grey Area and then 2016's, Won't Find Love in the Hills. On December 1, 2016, Amir announced that he had signed a deal with Def Jam Recordings, and that an album is set to release sometime in 2017. His debut single on Def Jam, "Wish You Well" was released on March 9, 2017.

Sean Seaton, known professionally as Neenyo, is a Canadian record producer and songwriter. He is known for his works with Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR as well as various artists including Future, Mr. Probz, blackbear, Jadakiss and Lloyd Banks.

Michael Martin Kaminski, known professionally as Plaza, is a Canadian singer, songwriter and producer from Toronto, Ontario. He is best known for his singles "Personal", "All Mine", and "Use Me". From 2017 to 2021 he was signed to OVO Sound, the record label co-founded by rapper Drake, producer Noah "40" Shebib and Oliver El-Khatib.

Daniel Dove, professionally known as Pvrx, is a Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter. Pvrx is known for his storytelling about growing up in the rough surroundings in government housing projects. He signed to Def Jam Recordings in 2017. He released his debut EP 3.14 on July 26, 2019.
