James E. O'Neill Jr. was a Democratic Michigan politician and teacher who served as a member of that state's House of Representatives from 1967 through 1994. [2] A high school teacher and elementary school principal in Hemlock,O'Neill was a tireless advocate for schools and education,a respected source of information on school finance,and a key contributor to the landmark changes made by Proposal A. [3] O'Neill was also a strong supporter of Saginaw Valley State University,and the arena in the Ryder Center on the campus was named in his honor in 1989. [4] [5] Following his retirement from the Legislature,O'Neill was appointed to the Board of State Canvassers. He died of complications from open-heart surgery on December 31,2002,aged 73. [6]

Edward Thompson Breathitt Jr. was an American politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A member of one of the state's political families,he was the 51st Governor of Kentucky,serving from 1963 to 1967. After serving in World War II and graduating from the University of Kentucky,Breathitt worked on the presidential campaign of Adlai Stevenson,the senatorial campaign of Alben Barkley,and the gubernatorial campaign of Bert T. Combs. When Combs won the governorship in 1959,he appointed Breathitt as personnel commissioner,where he wrote legislation establishing the first merit system for state employees. He continued to hold appointive offices throughout Combs' tenure,and in 1962,Combs endorsed Breathitt to succeed him as governor.

John Messinger was an American pioneer,politician,teacher,and surveyor who was the first Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. Born in Massachusetts,Messinger was educated in Vermont and married the daughter of Matthew Lyon. He left with Lyon to Kentucky,but disagreed with his stance on slavery and came to the Indiana Territory in 1802. He served in the Indiana Territorial Legislature and advocated for the creation of the Illinois Territory. When the state of Illinois was created in 1818,he co-authored its constitution and served in its first General Assembly as Speaker of the House. Messinger was also a prominent surveyor,establishing what is now the state line between Illinois and Wisconsin on behalf of the U.S. government.
