James Mainwaring is an English jazz composer, saxophonist and bandleader. [1]

Childhood and education

Mainwaring was born in 1989 in Warrington where he grew up singing in rock bands and joined the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra. [2] In 2007 he moved to Leeds to study jazz at Leeds College of Music [2] and completed an MA in composition from the University of York. [3]

Career

In 2011 Mainwaring co-found Roller Trio who have released two albums, [4] won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award 2011 [5] and in 2012 were chosen for BBC introducing, [6] nominated for the Mercury Prize, [7] MOBO best jazz act and best newcomer at the Jazz FM awards. [8]

Mainwaring is a session musician for Django Django as well as touring with them he appears on their single "Reflections" from their second album Born Under Saturn. [9] Mainwaring also performs solo on saxophone with electronics which was showcased at the EFG London Jazz Festival, [10] 2014 which was described as an 'intense, uncompromising performance that was utterly compelling". [11]

In 2015, he released the album The Earthworm's Eye View with his project Tipping Point, [12] which was described by John Fordham in The Guardian as "Playful, dark, skilful and spontaneous… a surefooted trip across many persuasions in contemporary music." [13]

Loose Tubes

Loose Tubes were a British jazz big band/orchestra active during the mid-to-late 1980s. Critically and popularly acclaimed, the band was considered to be the focal point of a 1980s renaissance in British jazz. It was the main launchpad for the careers of many future leading British jazz players including Django Bates, Iain Ballamy, Eddie Parker, Julian and Steve Argüelles, Mark Lockheart, Steve Berry, Tim Whitehead, Ashley Slater. In 2015, the band reformed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band's formation, with concerts at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and a sold out week at Ronnie Scott's.

The Parliamentary Jazz Awards in the United Kingdom are organised by the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group (APPJAG) at the Houses of Parliament in London. The group consists of over a hundred members drawn from across the UK political parties. The awards were the brainchild Bob Blizzard, a long-time enthusiast of the jazz genre who was concerned that there was a lack of national recognition for the work of jazz performers and venues across the UK. Blizzard was involved with organising and running the awards for 11 years. Also supporting the awards are Jazz Services, Jazz UK, Jazzwise, the UK Musicians' Union jazz section, and PPL.

Roller Trio are a British jazz-rock trio, who formed whilst studying at Leeds College of Music in 2011. In 2012, their eponymous debut studio album was nominated for the Mercury Prize alongside a nomination for the band as "Best Jazz Act" at the MOBO Awards that year. In performance, John Fordham of The Guardian described their preview gig for the Mercury prize [as having] "the same wild insouciance that has made their sound a howl of fresh air." DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson described their music as "Dark, menacing, bass heavy – the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz!" They are known for their "epic memorably singalong melody hooks and blistering riffs".

First House (band) Musical artist

First House was a British jazz quartet that was active between 1983 and 1990. Founded and led by saxophonist and composer Ken Stubbs, the group also consisted of Django Bates on piano, Mick Hutton on acoustic bass and Martin France on drum kit and percussion.

Phronesis (band) Jazz trio

Phronesis is a Jazz trio, formed in 2005 by Danish bass player Jasper Høiby, the piano trio is completed by British pianist Ivo Neame and Swedish drummer Anton Eger. Phronesis have been described by Jazzwise magazine as "the most exciting and imaginative piano trio since e.s.t. - Esbjörn Svensson Trio". Marius Søfteland Neset is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone) living in Copenhagen. He is known from collaborations within the jazz bands "People Are Machines", "Kaktusch", "JazzKamikaze" and Django Bates projects "StoRMChaser" big band and "Human Chain". He is the son of music teachers guitarist Terje Neset and pianist Anne Leni Søfteland Sæbø, and the brother of the vocalist Anna Søfteland Neset flautist Ingrid Søfteland Neset.

<i>Fracture</i> (Roller Trio album) 2014 studio album by Roller Trio

Fracture is the second studio album by Leeds Jazz-Rock ensemble Roller Trio following the success of their Mercury Prize nominated debut album Roller Trio. It was released in 2014 and in The Guardian John Fordham said [Roller Trio] "have come up with a second album that’s different and diverse, and on a live show it must be a gas". London Jazz News said "This is a marker laid down by a group operating at the vanguard of contemporary jazz." The album received 4 stars in All About Jazz where the reviewer Phil Barnes said, "This ability to blend the accessible and the serious, the melodic and the experimental is a real gift".

Tipping Point is an experimental contemporary jazz quartet from England, founded in 2013 by James Mainwaring. All members are alumni of Leeds College of Music and active in other successful projects.

Ian Cruickshank Musical artist

Ian Cruickshank was an English electric and acoustic guitarist most associated with the blues-rock and gypsy jazz genres, also well known in the U.K. as an educator, author and columnist, record producer and record label owner, festival organiser and promoter of artists in the gypsy jazz world. He achieved some success in the 1960s in the Keef Hartley Band playing electric guitar under the pseudonym Spit James before becoming enamoured of the gypsy jazz style originated by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s and devoting almost all of his energies to educating, performing and promoting activities in this area up till his death in 2017. He published several influential books on gypsy jazz, was producer and music co-ordinator for the TV Documentary Django Legacy, was the owner of the Fret Records record label, and organised the UK Gypsy Jazz Guitar Festival annually from 1997 to 2000.
