Lieutenant General James Francis Pardoe Swift, CB , OBE (born 6 October 1967) is a retired senior British Army officer.
Swift was born on 6 October 1967 in Bottisham, Cambridgeshire, England. He was educated at Netherhall School and Hills Road Sixth Form College. He studied chemistry at Christ Church, Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1989; as per tradition, his BA was promoted to a Master of Arts (MA Oxon) degree in 1992. [1]
Swift was commissioned in to the Royal Regiment of Wales on 1 September 1989. [2] He served as commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Welsh during the Iraq War, [3] for which he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on 25 July 2008. [4] He became Commander of the 20th Armoured Brigade in May 2012. [1]
Swift was appointed Director of Strategy in March 2016; [5] the post was re-titled as Assistant Chief of the General Staff in September 2018. [6] He became General Officer Commanding the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division in November 2018. [7] It was announced on 30 January 2020 that Swift would become Chief of Defence People (CDP), succeeding Lieutenant General Richard Nugee in late February 2020. [8] Swift was promoted to lieutenant general on 27 February 2020, [9] and retired from the army on 25 April 2023. [10]
Swift was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2023 New Year Honours. [11]
Field Marshal Peter Anthony Inge, Baron Inge, was a senior British Army officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army, from 1992 to 1994 and then served as Chief of the Defence Staff before retiring in 1997. Early in his military career he saw action during the Malayan Emergency and Operation Banner in Northern Ireland, and later in his career he provided advice to the British Government during the Bosnian War.
General John Nicholas Reynolds Houghton, Baron Houghton of Richmond, is a retired senior British Army officer and former Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the British Armed Forces. He was appointed CDS in July 2013, following the retirement of General Sir David Richards. He served as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the Green Howards in Northern Ireland during The Troubles and later became Commander of the 39th Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. He deployed as Senior British Military Representative and Deputy Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq during the Iraq War. Later, he became Chief of Joint Operations at Permanent Joint Headquarters and served as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff until assuming the position of CDS. Houghton retired from the British Army in July 2016, and was succeeded as CDS by Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach.

Lieutenant General John Cooper, is a former senior British Army officer. From March 2008 he was the Deputy Commander of Multinational Force-Iraq (MNF-I), the operational-level headquarters in Iraq, and the Senior British Military Representative-Iraq. As Deputy Commander, he was the principal assistant to General Raymond T. Odierno of the United States Army. He stepped down on 4 March 2009, and retired from the army later that year.
Major-General Anthony Peter Grant Peterkin is a retired senior British Army officer. He was the British House of Commons' Serjeant at Arms between 2004 and 2007.
