James Wani Igga (born 1949) is a South Sudanese who was the second vice president of South Sudan. [3] He was speaker of the National Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2013 [4] and secretary general of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. [5]
Igga was born in 1949. [6] He is variously described to stem from the Bari [7] and Zande [8] ethnic groups and he is a Roman Catholic. He studied economics in Cairo. [7]
Igga joined the South Sudanese rebels in 1985,training in Cuba and Ethiopia. He rose rapidly through the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) ranks, [7] and,by 1987,had the rank of major and commanded the Shakus Battalion. [9] The same year,he was Zonal Commander of Central Equatoria and a member of the SPLA High Command. [10] He was reportedly well-respected among civilians. [11]
Igga was one of the SPLA's most senior representatives during negotiations with SPLA-Nasir. He represented Garang as the head of the SPLA-Torit delegation at peace talks in Nairobi in November 1991. In 1993,he accompanied Garang to Nairobi for a peacemaking seminar in June and to Kampala for an IGAD-mediated dialogue with the Nasir faction. [12] Igga had known Lam Akol,one of the Nasir leaders,since their time together in the Cuban training camp. [8]
As chairman of the SPLM Political Affairs Commission,Igga established the Technical Committee of Intellectuals in February 2000. This committee was tasked with planning the civil administration of Southern Sudan. [13]
Following the 2005 signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement establishing the autonomy of Southern Sudan,Igga was in charge of changing the SPLM from an insurgent strategic leadership to a political party. He was chosen as the speaker of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly in 2005, [14] and he continued in that office until independence in 2011. In addition,he was appointed caretaker governor of Upper Nile State for the transitional period. [13]
Igga read out the proclamation of independence when the two Sudans divided. [7] He continued as the legislative speaker of the lower house from 2011 to 2013. [15]
President Salva Kiir appointed Igga as vice president on 23 August 2013 to replace Riek Machar,who he had dismissed a month previously. He was required to resign as speaker. [16] Igga was unanimously confirmed by the National Assembly on 26 August. [17]
On 30 May 2020,Igga tested positive for COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Sudan. [18]
On 19 August 2020,six of Igga's bodyguards were killed in a road ambush by National Salvation Front rebels in Igga's home town of Lobonok. He was not with those bodyguards at the time. [19]
Dr. John Garang De Mabior was a Sudanese politician and revolutionary leader. From 1983 to 2005,he led the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement as a commander in chief during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He briefly served as First Vice President of Sudan for three weeks,from the comprehensive peace agreement of 2005 until his death in a helicopter crash on July 30,2005. A developmental economist by profession,Garang was one of the major influence on the movement that led to the foundation of South Sudan independence from the rule of the government of Omar Bashir the former president of Sudan (Khartoum).

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement is a political party in South Sudan. It was initially founded as the political wing of the Sudan People's Liberation Army in 1983. On January 9,2005 the SPLA,the SPLM and the Government of Sudan signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement,ending the civil war. SPLM then obtained representation in the Government of Sudan,and was the main constituent of the Government of the then semi-autonomous Southern Sudan. When South Sudan became a sovereign state on 9 July 2011,SPLM became the ruling party of the new republic. SPLM branches in Sudan separated themselves from SPLM,forming the Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North. Further factionalism appeared as a result of the 2013–2014 South Sudanese Civil War,with President Salva Kiir leading the SPLM-Juba and former Vice President Riek Machar leading the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition.
Dr.Lam Akol Ajawin,is a South Sudanese politician of Shilluk descent. He is the current leader of National Democratic Movement (NDM) party. He is a former high-ranking official in the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA),and subsequently became the Foreign Minister of Sudan from September 2005 to October 2007,when the Khartoum government offered the SPLA several other key ministries as part of a peace agreement.
William Nyuon Bany Machar was a Southern Sudanese politician who was also one of the founders of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). He was appointed third in command after John Garang and Kerubino Kuanyin Bol. While he worked as a commander of the SPLA he lived in Itang,a small Ethiopian town in the Gambela Region.

Clement Wani Konga is a Mundari leader who fought in the Anyanya independence movement in the south of Sudan in 1969−72. He then joined the army of Sudan and rose to the rank of major general. In 2004 he made peace with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and was appointed interim governor of Central Equatoria in South Sudan. In August 2015 he was dismissed from his post by president Salva Kiir Mayardit. He continued to be active as chairperson of the Mundari Community.

He served as the First Vice President of South Sudan from 23 July 2016 to February 2020. He was mining minister before being appointed as acting first vice president.

The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and 10 others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

The South Sudan Opposition Alliance is a coalition of political parties and armed groups in South Sudan that opposed the government of President Salva Kiir. It was formed in February 2018 in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia,by nine groups. In September the alliance acceded to a revised peace deal with the government that also included the main rebel faction,the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition,but some of the member groups disagreed with the decision and split from the alliance. The pro-deal SSOA has experienced continued tension between its members,as well as with the government.

On 4 January 2018,SPLM-IO rebels loyal to Chan Garang Lual attacked the western parts of Juba,the capital of South Sudan. The raid was part of the South Sudanese Civil War. Once in Juba,the insurgents were reportedly joined by Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers who were loyal to deposed chief of staff Paul Malong Awan. Following heavy fighting lasting until early 5 January,the rebels retreated into the countryside. Even though Chan Garang assumed responsibility for the attack,both the South Sudanese government and the SPLM-IO condemned the clashes,with the latter claiming that its forces had not been involved at all.
Mabior Garang de-Mabior is a South Sudanese politician and activist and the eldest son of John Garang,the founder of the ruling party,the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
