Jamie Richards is a leading thoroughbred horse racing trainer in New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Early career

Jamie's father, Paul Richards, was an accomplished jockey and his mother, Leanne Richards was a racing administrator.

Jamie was also an amateur jockey, winning 5 races in 10 starts.

Jamie attended Otago Boys' High School and then Otago University, he achieved a Bachelor of Commerce in Management and Accounting and a Diploma in Marketing. He was selected for the Sunline International Management Scholarship to undertake stud and stable experience in Europe and the United States.

He later worked for New Zealand Bloodstock before moving to Matamata to work at Waikato Stud.

Te Akau Racing

Jamie entered into a formal training partnership at Te Akau Racing with Stephen Autridge in May 2015. He took over as sole trainer in July 2018. [1]

Hong Kong

On 17 December 2021, it was announced by The Hong Kong Jockey Club that Jamie Richards was granted a trainer license in Hong Kong with effect from start of the 2022/23 Hong Kong Racing Season. [3] He was replaced at Matamata by Mark Walker who previously headed Te Akau Racing’s operation in Kranji, Singapore. [4]

Jamie had his first winner, Handsome Rebel, at Happy Valley in Hong Kong on 12 October 2022.

Gingernuts is a retired New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse. As a three-year-old, he won the 142nd running of the New Zealand Derby, followed up by a win in the Rosehill Guineas in Australia. At age four, he won the Windsor Park Plate and was second in the Livamol Classic, but then was injured while warming up for the Emirates Stakes. The injury required surgery that eventually prompted his retirement.

Tranquil was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed considerable promise as a two-year-old when she won one race and finished second in the Gimcrack Stakes. In the following season she was one of the best horses in Britain, scoring classic victories in the 1000 Guineas and St Leger Stakes as well as winning four other races including the Jockey Club Cup and Newmarket Oaks. She won once in 1924 before her racing career was ended by injury. She made no impact as a broodmare.

Airs and Graces was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she raced in the colours of the 6th Duke of Portland and showed modest ability, winning one minor race. After being bought by the Australian sportsman W T Jones she showed much improved form at three in 1898, winning the Epsom Oaks and being placed in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. She failed to win a race in 1900 but ran well to finish second in the Cambridgeshire Handicap. She was exported to France to become a broodmare and produced two top-class winners.

Colin Maurice Jillings was a New Zealand Thoroughbred horse racing trainer from the early 1950s until his retirement in September 2005. He was inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Melody Belle is a champion New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse who is the only horse to win the New Zealand Triple Crown.
