Janeese Lewis George (born April 30,1988) is an American lawyer,politician,and activist in Washington,D.C. She is the Member of the Council of the District of Columbia from Ward 4. [1] George is a member of the Democratic Party. [2]
Elected in November 2020,George became the first self-described democratic socialist to serve as a member of the Council since Hilda Mason was defeated for re-election in 1998. [3] [1]
George was born in Washington,D.C.,the daughter of a postal worker,and attended the School Without Walls in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. [4] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics and government from St. John's University. [5] She earned a Juris Doctor from the Howard University School of Law,working as a waitress to pay her tuition. [6] [7]
After graduating from law school,George worked as a prosecutor in Philadelphia [8] In 2014,she returned to D.C. to care for her ailing father and served in the office of Attorney General of the District of Columbia,Karl Racine. [9] George was a member of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1403 while working at the Attorney General's office. [10] As a juvenile prosecutor in DC,she used experiences from losing peers to violence during her upbringing to help her colleagues. [8] Before launching her campaign for the Council,George worked for the District of Columbia State Board of Education. [7]
In 2019,George launched her campaign for the Council of the District of Columbia. George was the subject of attack ads by Democrats for Education Reform,an advocacy group that supports charter schools,over claims that she would defund the police. [11] She was endorsed by a significant number of progressive groups,including Black Lives Matter,the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. [12]
George was the first candidate to reach the limit in matching funds through the District's public financing program since it was initiated. The program provides matching funds but limits donations to $50 per supporter,of which she had almost 1,200 by March 2020. [6] On June 2,she defeated incumbent Brandon Todd by an 11.7-point margin. She was elected to the Council of the District of Columbia in November 2020. [1]

He lost the June 2016 Democratic primary election to Robert White. Although his term was not due to end until January 2,2017,Orange resigned from the council effective August 15,2016,in the wake of conflict of interest charges over his new employment at the Chamber of Commerce.
John K. Evans III is an American lawyer and politician who served on the Council of the District of Columbia from 1991 to 2020 before resigning due to numerous ethics violations. Evans served as the chairman of the board of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) until its ethics committee found he violated conflict of interest rules. A member of the Democratic Party,he represented Ward 2 of Washington,D.C. from May 1991 to January 2020,making him the D.C. Council's longest-serving lawmaker. He ran for Mayor in 1998 and 2014,but lost in the Democratic primary both times.
Muriel Elizabeth Bowser is an American politician who has served as the mayor of the District of Columbia since 2015. Brandon Tristan Todd is a lobbyist for Washington Gas and a former American politician who represented Ward 4 on the Council of the District of Columbia. Todd previously worked in the Council office of Muriel Bowser and in various campaign positions during her successful campaign for Mayor of the District of Columbia. Todd won a special election in May 2015,succeeding Muriel Bowser,who was elected as mayor. After serving one full term on the council,Todd lost the 2020 Democratic primary to Janeese Lewis George.

Initiative 77 was a voter-approved ballot initiative in Washington,D.C.,to phase out the special minimum wage for tipped employees as part of the national Fight for $15 campaign. In the June 2018 primary election,D.C. voters approved Initiative 77 by a margin of 56% to 44%;however,the D.C. Council repealed the initiative in October before it could enter into force. In 2022,a nearly identical Initiative 82 was approved for the November 8,2022 election.
On November 8,2022,Washington,D.C.,held an election for its mayor. Incumbent Democrat Muriel Bowser was elected to a third term. The Republican nominee,Stacia Hall,received 2,368 votes in the primary,and independent candidate Rodney "Red" Grant garnered 4,700 signatures to gain ballot access. Both appeared on the general election ballot along with Libertarian Party candidate Dennis Sobin. D.C. Statehood Green Party nominee Corren Brown did not appear on the general election ballot.
