Jason Cullinane is an American distance runner, coach, road race administrator, and retired Army officer. He competed in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials (track and field), and earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army over 20 years of service. Cullinane serves on the Board of Directors for the Falmouth Road Race.
Cullinane grew up in Falmouth, Massachusetts and attended Falmouth High School, where he was a member of the 1985 All-State Champion cross country team. [1] He continued his running career at Fitchburg State University, earning four NCAA All-American awards in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Cullinane was inducted into the Fitchburg State Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. [2]
After college, Cullinane enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for over two decades until his retirement in 2022. [3] He completed tours of duty in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Iraq. During his service in Bosnia in 2004, Cullinane was the media director for the Psychological Operations at Stabilization Force headquarters at Camp Butmir. [4]
While in the Army and based in Alabama, Cullinane qualified for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, with a career-best time of 8:38.37. [5] He didn’t qualify for the Olympic Team, but continued posting national-class results over the next three years.
In 1998, Cullinane placed ninth at the USA Track and Field Championships in the steeplechase with a time of 8:47.45. A few weeks later, he posted a career-best time of 3:46.38 in the 1,500 meters at an event in Montreal. [6] Later that year, he placed fifth at the USATF New England Cross Country Championship. In 1999, Cullinane logged times of 8:13 in the indoor 3,000 meters and 1:07:41 in the half marathon. [7]
Cullinane is the cross country coach at Falmouth Academy and has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Falmouth Road Race since 2022. [1]
Outside of running and coaching, Cullinane serves as an elected Town Meeting member for the city of Falmouth, Massachusetts, where he is on the Finance Committee. [8]
Cullinane lives in West Falmouth, Massachusetts with his wife and two daughters. [1]
