Jaya Thyagarajan (born at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India in 1956) is a traditional Indian artist noted for her Tanjore paintings. [1] [2] [3] Jaya was born in Madras State where these paintings originated.
After getting her bachelor of Arts in History in 1976 and a master of Arts in Indian Philosophy in 1978, she obtained a diploma in Fine Arts from the Kalakshetra School of fine arts in Madras under the guidance of Shri K. Sreenivasulu, head of the Department.
Jaya has been an ardent follower of the Tanjore School of Paintings and her various exhibits are the reproductions of some of the old Tanjore masterpieces.
Her first Exhibition was at Kalakshetra school in 1980 followed by one in 1981. She has held successful Solo Exhibitions at Max Muller Bhavan in 1982 and Triveni Art Gallery in New Delhi in May 1992 and August 1993. She was asked to participate in Kala-Mela organized by Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in 1986.
Jaya's paintings were selected for the Traditional Art exhibition held by the All India Fine arts and Crafts Society in 1989 and 2000. Her works have also been selected for exhibitions held by Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu Emporium, New Delhi in January and June 1992 and October 1993.
Jaya also had an exhibition of her works at Nehru Centre of the High Commission of India, London in October 1995, St. Denis Municipality, Reunion Island, Indira Gandhi Centre for Arts and Culture, Mauritius in April 1997 and ANZ Grindlays Bank, New Delhi in October 1997,1998. In 2002 Jaya conducted an exhibition of her works at the Indian Embassy, Washington DC. She also held an Exhibition of her paintings at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur in 2006.
Jaya also recently exhibited her work of Tanjore Paintings at The Consulate General of India, New York, in association with Asia Initiatives, at the launch of Asia Initiatives in USA.
Jaya's creations today enjoy a place of pride in many homes and Corporate Offices in India and other parts of the World.
Kalakshetra Foundation, formerly simply Kalakshetra, is an arts and cultural academy dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in Indian art and crafts, especially in the field of Bharatanatyam dance and Gandharvaveda music. Based in Chennai, India, the academy was founded in January 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale and her husband George Arundale. Under Arundale's guidance, the institution achieved national and international recognition for its unique style and perfectionism. In 1962, Kalakshetra moved to a new campus in Besant Nagar, Chennai, occupying 40 hectares of land.
Rukmini Devi Arundale was an Indian theosophist, dancer and choreographer of the Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam, and an activist for animal welfare.
Anjolie Ela Menon is one of India's leading contemporary artists. Her paintings are in several major collections, including the NGMA, the Chandigarh Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum. In 2006, her triptych work "Yatra" was acquired by the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, California. Other works also been a part of group exhibitions including 'Kalpana: Figurative Art in India', presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in London's Aicon Gallery in 2009. Her preferred medium is oil on masonite, though she has also worked in other media, including Murano glass, computer graphics and water colour. She is a well known muralist. She was awarded the Padma Shree in 2000. She lives and works in New Delhi.
Sudha Ragunathan is an Indian Carnatic vocalist, singer and composer. She was conferred the Kalaimamani award by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1994, Padma Shri (2004) and Padma Bhushan (2015) by the Government of India, and Sangeetha Kalanidhi by Madras Music Academy in 2013.
C. N. Karunakaran was an Indian painter, illustrator and art director from Kerala. He was the Chairman of the Kerala Lalitakala Academy and a recipient of several honours including the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Award which he won thrice. The Akademi honoured him again with the fellowship in 2005.

Prayag Jha Chillar also known as Prayag Jha is a contemporary Indian artist, specialized in etching. Her works are kept as collections in all over India, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in the capital; Delhi. Jha's work was showcased in solo exhibitions from 1971 to 2012 across Jehangir Art Gallery, Taj Art Gallery, Bajaj Art Gallery and Art Heritage New Delhi. Her work depicts scenes from the ancient Indian epic Meghdoot and is inspired by natural forms such as grass and leaves. Jha's earlier works were primarily monochrome, but have evolved to include strong colors.
S. Sowmya is a Carnatic music singer. She learnt music initially from her father Dr. Srinivasan, and later from Dr. S. Ramanathan and Smt.T. Muktha. She received the Sangeetha Kalanidhi title by Madras Music Academy in 2019 and the Isai Perarignar by the Tamil Isai Sangam in 2022. She was appointed by the Govt of Tamil Nadu as Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Music & Fine Arts University on April 8, 2022, for a period of three years.
Kovalezhi Cheeramputhoor Sankara Paniker was an Indian metaphysical and abstract painter from Malabar District. He interpreted the country's age-old metaphysical and spiritual knowledge in the 1960s, when Indian art was under the influence of the Western painters. "That was the time when a few Indian artists were trying to break out of this Western influence and establish an idiom and identity of their own," he said.

Nagai Muralidharan is a Carnatic violinist from India. He was awarded Kalaimamani by the State Government of Tamil Nadu in 2003.
V. Anamika is a Contemporary Artist born in Neelankarai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a student of S. Dhanapal, an eminent artist of India. She received her master's degree in Fine Arts in 1999 from Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. She undertook a course on Care of museum objects at Government Museum in 2005. In 2006, she went to Scotland as a visiting artist scholar to learn Japanese wood-block printing at Edinburgh printmaker's studio.

Biren De (1926–2011) was an Indian painter of modern art, known for his paintings with tantric influences. His paintings were characterized by symmetrical patterns of geometry and the presence of tantric symbols such as mandala, phallus and vagina, reportedly representing masculine and feminine energies of the universe. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 1992.
Ananda Shankar Jayant is an Indian classical dancer, choreographer, scholar and bureaucrat, known for her proficiency in the classical dance forms of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She is the first woman officer in the Indian Railway Traffic Service on South Central Railway and her 2009 TED talk is ranked among the top twelve Incredible TED talks on cancer. She is a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalaimamani Award of the Government of Tamil Nadu and Kala Ratna Award of the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for her contributions to arts.
The GROUP 1890 exhibition was held from 20 to 29 October 1963 at Lalit Kala Akademi, Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi, India. It was the only exhibition of the artist collective 'group 1890', hence the only existing record of the group's exhibition history in the 1960s contemporary art in India. The group was an entirely male association with 12 members which 'stood passionately and romantically for values of modernism that signaled change'. The members were Raghav Kaneria, M. Reddeppa Naidu, Ambadas Khobragade, Rajesh Mehra, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, Jagdish Swaminathan, Himmat Shah, Jeram Patel, S. G. Nikam, Eric Bowen, Jyoti Bhatt, and Balkrishna Patel. All of which participated in this inaugural exhibition.
