Jean Alfazema Nachika Kalilani is a Malawian politician who has served in the Cabinet of Malawi as Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security since 2015. Previously she was Minister of Health from 2014 to 2015. She is also the Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and second term Member of Parliament for Dowa Central Constituency. [1]
She worked for the World Health Organization in Botswana as a country representative. [2]
In 2010 she was elected to chair of Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus,in 2010,after a difficult time when Anita Kalinde was impeached. It was suspected that Anita Kalinde who was Joyce Banda's niece had used the position to forward their political ambitions. Kalilani was appointed as a minister in the following year and Christina Chiwoko became an interim chairperson until Cecilia Chazama was elected. [3]
After DPP candidate Peter Mutharika was elected President,he appointed Kalilani as Minister of Health in June 2014. She was moved to the post of Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security in August 2015. [4]
Kalilani had been elected to be the DPP's Secretary General. She was replaced in 2014 by order of the DPP's executive committee by Ecrain Julius Kudontoni. [5]
In 2016 she was the Minister for gender,disability and social welfare. The government had passed a number of related acts of legislation so Kalilani worked with the ministry of rural affairs to organise a meeting of lady chiefs. Over two days they were encouraged to use their social capital to publicise this legislation and to encourage others to challenge traditions. [6]
She was invited by the African Union in 2017 to take the lead on gender for an African Union meeting. [7] In the following year she organised celebrations for International Women's Day involving the first lady Gertrude Mutharika and concentrating on women in the countryside. The progress of Malawi on gender was encouraged by the UN's representative Clara Anyangwe and Kalilani was invited to New York to discuss gender related issues at the United Nations. [8]
Kalilani is the mother of recording artist and aspiring politician Tay Grin. [9]
The United Democratic Front is a political party in Malawi founded in 1992 by Bakili Muluzi. It claims to be a liberal party in Malawi and is mainly strong in the southern region populated by ethnic Yao. Bakili Muluzi was President of Malawi from 1994 to 2004.
Joyce Hilda Banda is a Malawian politician,who served as President of Malawi,from 7 April 2012 to 31 May 2014. Banda took office as President following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika. She is the founder and leader of the People's Party,created in 2011. She has served in various roles as a member of Parliament and as Minister of Gender and Child Welfare before she became the President of the Republic of Malawi.
Madame Callista Chapola-Chimombo is a Malawian politician and the widow of President Bingu wa Mutharika. She served as the First Lady of the Republic of Malawi from 2010 to 2012. Chimombo was a member of the Cabinet of Malawi as a National Coordinator of Maternal,Infant and Child Health and HIV/Nutrition/Malaria and Tuberculosis.
Limbani Kalilani is a Malawian Hip Hop artist better known by his stage name Tay Grin. In 2009 Tay Grin founded an Entertainment &Event Promotion company,which helps to promote events across Malawi. The company is known as Black Rhyno Entertainment. In 2014,Grin won a Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts (BEFFTA) award for Best International African Act. In 2016,he won the BEFFTA Star Award in the music category. He has performed at the annual Lake of Stars Music Festival. He also won the 2016 WatsUp TV Africa Music Video Awards Best Traditional Video award,with the Video Chipapapa featuring 2baba. He has also won numerous local awards like the Nyasa Music awards and the Urban Music People in categories such as best live act,best video and best Male artist. In 2018,he won the UMP Fashion awards for Most Fashionable Celebrity.
Arthur Peter Mutharika is a Malawian politician and lawyer who was President of Malawi from May 2014 to June 2020. Mutharika has worked in the field of international justice,specialising in international economic law,international law and comparative constitutional law. He informally served as an adviser to his older brother,President Bingu wa Mutharika,on issues of foreign and domestic policy from the onset of his election campaign until the President's death on 5 April 2012.
