Jeffrey W. Bailey (born 1968[ citation needed ]) is an American Anglican bishop, consultant, and part-time academic. He was elected bishop of the Churches for the Sake of Others (C4SO) in April 2025, [1] and consecrated in September 2025. [2] He is also the co-editor of the 2011 volume An Eerdmans Reader in Contemporary Political Theology .
Bailey is the principal of Panorama Strategies, LLC, a consultancy established in 2012. [3] [4] He previously worked at the Centre for Social Justice in London, serving as deputy director (2010–2011) and managing director (2012). [3] From 2012 he also held strategy roles with other non-profit organizations, including as director of strategy at Openfields until 2024. [5]
Bailey completed his Ph.D. in theology at the University of Cambridge in 2010 with a dissertation entitled The political theology of Karl Barth for an ascendant American Evangelicalism. [6]
During his doctoral studies he was an affiliated lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge (2007–2010). [7] [8] Since 2024 he has taught part-time as an adjunct professor of Christian Thought at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. [3]
Bailey’s early ministry was in the Vineyard movement. From 1994 to 1996 he served as an assistant pastor at The King’s Arms Church in Bedford, England, [3] and from 1996 to 1999 he was deputy to the national coordinator for church planting in the Association of Vineyard Churches USA. [3] In 1999 he planted a Vineyard congregation in Washington, D.C., which closed in 2003. [3]
After moving into Anglican ministry, Bailey was trained for ordination at the Church of the Resurrection, Washington, D.C., and was ordained deacon in 2017 and priest in 2018 by Steve Breedlove, bishop of the Diocese of Christ Our Hope. [9] [10] [11] He later assisted at the Church of the Advent in Washington, D.C., also in a non-stipendiary role.
From 2019 to 2025 Bailey served as Canon for Leadership Development in the Diocese of Christ Our Hope, coordinating clergy training programs and retreats. [3]
In April 2025 Bailey was elected diocesan bishop of C4SO, succeeding Todd Hunter. He was consecrated on September 27, 2025, at Truro Anglican Church by Bishop Steve Wood. [12] [13]
Bailey is co-editor of An Eerdmans Reader in Contemporary Political Theology (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2011), with William T. Cavanaugh and Craig Hovey. [3] He also co-edited a 2007 special issue of the Cambridge Review of International Affairs on religion and international relations. [3] His shorter writings include an article in The Christian Century (2006) and a book review in Studies in Christian Ethics (2007). [3]
A proposed book with Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Interfaith Relations: A Guide for the Perplexed, was announced but has not been published as of September 2025. [14] [15]
Bailey is married to Alicia Bailey, a licensed clinical social worker. They have three children. [3]
