Steven Allen Breedlove (born 1950) is an American prelate of the Anglican Church in North America. He was elected as the first Presider Bishop of PEARUSA, a missionary district that was formerly part of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, in 2012. In 2016, Breedlove became the first diocesan bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope.

Biography

Breedlove was born in Tyler, Texas to First Lieutenant James Robby Breedlove and Paula Kent. [1] [2] He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and attended Washington and Lee University for undergraduate studies. [1] He then obtained Master of Theology and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary, [1] writing a dissertation based on case studies in team ministry at Bethany Chapel in Calgary, Alberta, where he was the senior pastor from 1990 to 1997. [3] [4] He was a non-denominational Christian pastor for 29 years prior to converting to Anglicanism in 2001. [5]

In 2005, Breedlove was ordained as a priest of the Anglican Church of Rwanda and served as a pastor at the Church of the Apostles. [1] Later that year, he founded All Saints Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, serving as the church's rector. [5] [6] [1] He was also the founder and director of the Anglican Missional Pastor leadership program developed for men and women entering ordained ministry. [7]

After the withdrawal of the Anglican Mission in the Americas, Breedlove was unanimously elected the first Presider Bishop pro tem of PEARUSA, the new missionary district of the Anglican Church of Rwanda in the United States, a dual church body of the Anglican Church of Rwanda and the Anglican Church in North America, and was appointed by Archbishop Onesphore Rwaje. [1] [8] He was installed on 11 June 2012. Bishop Breedlove's consecration took place on 29 October 2012, in Denver, Colorado, by Archbishop Robert Duncan. [8]

Breedlove became the first diocesan bishop of the newly constituted Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope on 21 June 2016 upon the dissolution of PEARUSA resulting from its transfer from the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda to the Anglican Church in North America. [9] [10]

On April 5, 2022, several people from the Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope came forward alleging abuse by Reverend Dan Claire at Church of the Resurrection. They claimed that diocesan leaders, including Breedlove, failed to adequately hold "Claire accountable[ neutrality is disputed ] and did not center the needs of [the complainants]." [11] [ vague ] The complaints resulted in an investigation into Breedlove's handling of the abuse allegations, conducted by Grand River Solutions. [12] [13] Rev. Claire contested the investigations and petitioned the Anglican Church in North America Provincial Tribunal for an “end to all judicial proceedings related to the complaints raised in 2020 and 2021 or claims similar thereto” because the Diocese neglected to find anything over the course of the investigation that "constituted canonically actionable behavior or moral, ethical, or financial misdealings." [14] [15]

On Thursday June 17, 2021 the College of Bishops of the Anglican Church in North America elected Alan Hawkins as Bishop Coadjutor of the Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope. [16] Hawkins will serve alongside Breedlove until Breedlove transitions out of episcopal ministry. [16]

He has been married to Sally Breedlove, a writer, since 1972 and they have five children and fourteen grandchildren. [5] [17] [18] In 2009, Breedlove co-wrote the book The Shame Exchange - Trading Shame for God's Mercy and Freedom with his wife and Ralph and Jennifer Ennis.

Headquartered in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, the church reported more than 1,000 congregations and more than 128,000 members in 2023. The first archbishop of the ACNA was Robert Duncan, who was succeeded by Foley Beach in 2014. In June 2024, the College of Bishops elected Steve Wood as the third archbishop of the ACNA. Authority was transferred to him during the closing Eucharist at the ACNA Assembly 2024 conference in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

The Anglican Church of Rwanda is a province of the Anglican Communion, covering 13 dioceses in Rwanda. The primate of the province is Laurent Mbanda, consecrated on 10 June 2018.

PEARUSA was the North American missionary district of the Anglican Church of Rwanda. It took the first part of its name from the acronym for the Rwandan church's official French name. PEARUSA was also a sub-jurisdiction of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), but on 23 September 2015 the Synod of the Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda at its regular meeting held at St. Etienne Cathedral in Kigali, Rwanda resolved to fully transfer PEARUSA to the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) with some of the existing PEARUSA networks becoming full ACNA dioceses by June 2016. Upon the unanimous vote of ACNA's Provincial Council on 21 June 2016, PEARUSA was fully transferred to ACNA with two of the three former PEARUSA networks [Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, West] becoming full ACNA dioceses known respectively as the Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope and the Anglican Diocese of the Rocky Mountains. The former PEARUSA Southeast network did not become a full, separate ACNA diocese. According to a decision that had been reached at their clergy meeting and released on 8 February 2016, the 20 parishes of PEARUSA Southeast has folded into the already existing ACNA dioceses.

The Anglican Diocese of Christ Our Hope is a diocese of the Anglican Church in North America. The diocese originated from the dissolution of the Missionary District of PEARUSA, which resulted in the creation of two new dioceses, both admitted at the ACNA at their General Council on 21 June 2016. It has 33 parishes in 11 American states, which are Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, and in Washington, D.C. The state with most parishes is North Carolina, with 11. The diocese's bishop ordinary is Steve Breedlove, since 2016, with Quigg Lawrence as the suffragan bishop and Alan J. Hawkins as the bishop coadjutor.
