Jeffrey David Collins (born 27 October 1961) is an Australian politician. He was a member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2016 to 2020,representing the electorate of Fong Lim. He was member of the governing Labor Party,but was one of three MPs excluded from the Labor caucus on 21 December 2018 over alleged criticism of the government, [1] [2] and resigned from the party on 8 February 2019 to sit as an independent. [3] In March 2020 he joined the Territory Alliance as its second MP. [4]
Collins was an electrician and a firefighter before gaining a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Sydney and a law degree at the University of Technology,Sydney. He worked as a senior solicitor at Colin Biggers &Paisley,and as a barrister for Edmund Barton Chambers in Sydney. [5] He moved to Darwin in 2012,working as a special counsel with Clayton Utz and then with Ward Keller. He was treasurer of the Law Society NT and a member of the National Human Rights Committee of the Law Council of Australia. [5]

Collins joined the ALP in mid-1980s. [3] He was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in 2016 in the electoral division of Fong Lim,previously held by Dave Tollner,who did not recontest after losing preselection for the new safer seat of Spillett. The seat had been significantly redistributed before the election,losing all of its area near Palmerston and all but erasing the Country Liberal majority. Amid the CLP's collapse in Darwin at that election,Collins won the seat for Labor on a swing of over eight percent.
In 2017,Collins chaired a Select Committee on Opening Parliament to the People which resulted in a fundamental change to the way bills passing through the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly were scrutinised.
Also in 2017,Collins travelled to Portugal to undertake a study of the 2001 Portuguese Drug Strategy,and became a vocal proponent of the harm minimisation approach to drug laws.
In March 2020,Collins joined the Territory Alliance,citing its "ideology-free" nature and stating:"What I am interested in is being part of the next government in an effective manner that helps policy development,and legislation development and passage,that benefits all of the territory". [4] [6]
The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia,the two partners in the federal coalition.
Clare Majella Martin is a former Australian journalist and politician. She was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly in a shock by-election win in 1995. The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members,each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system,having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election,but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024.
David William Tollner is an Australian politician. He was the Country Liberal Party member for Solomon in the Australian House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007,and then served in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly as the member for Fong Lim from 2008 to 2016. He was the Deputy Chief Minister of the Northern Territory under chief minister Adam Giles from 2013 to 2014. During his time in federal parliament,he sat with the Liberal Party.

Territory Alliance is an Australian political party based in the Northern Territory. It was founded in 2019 by Terry Mills,an incumbent member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. He had been elected as a member of the Country Liberal Party (CLP). In March 2020,two additional independent MLAs joined the party,Jeff Collins and Robyn Lambley. This saw the Alliance surpass the CLP as the second-largest party in the Legislative Assembly,but failed to gain official opposition status after a secret ballot of non-Government members of the Legislative Assembly instead recognised the CLP in a 5-3 vote. Despite hopes of forming government in its own right,or a coalition with the CLP or Labor in a minority government,the party was left with only one seat following the 2020 Territory election. With Robyn Lambley's departure from the Territory Alliance,the party currently has no representation in the Legislative Assembly.
The 2024 Northern Territory general election is scheduled to be held on 24 August 2024 to elect all 25 members of the Legislative Assembly in the unicameral Northern Territory Parliament.
